benjamin1945 16,118
I am proud to have come from the old Bestwood estate, and brought up by hard working loving parents who lived all their lives in a council house that they loved and took care of,............They never aspired to want or need anything else. (was that a crime?).. Back in the 40s 50s and 60s nearly everyone in council houses were the same,i think the change started in the 70s and has continued ever since,it can't be right that the council houses that were sold under the right to buy and largely now been sold to speculaters,,as Catfan states originally it was public stock for the working man,but now the people renting them out are charging up to 3 times the rent of existing council/city homes tenants, The government go on about building 'affordable' homes to rent, and a similar thing happens people buy to rent'....then obviously they are no longer affordable' to thousands trying to get on the ladder.
