Nottingham from above - Oxclose Lane

Recommended Posts

I did this because of something Stu mentioned in another thread, referring to Collier's Pad going towards Redhill. This is the closest I can get to the relevant area.

On 24/01/2016 at 0:51 AM, Stu said:

... where the old Bestwood Hotel still stands at the Eastern end of Park Road, the road - then path continues straight on to Mansfield Road at Redhill and is named Colliers Pad (or sometimes Path). The map references to look out for are Gaunt Hill and Violet Hill I think.

Colliers Pad is approx 2.25m long and emerges at Redhill in two spots. The main one these days is on Thornton Avenue, Redhill which is the main access for New Farm (Hammonds Farm) and the other one at Henry Street which is off Mansfield Road opposite the Ram Inn a few yards down the road.

The road going up the middle is Oxclose Lane. Half way up going out on the left is Edwards Lane, with the railway bridge. Further up on the left is the Heathfield Road triangle.

I think these 'from above' shots were taken mid-thirties (as per other thread). Maybe somebody like Benji would know better than me but I think the Arnwood Estate would have been built in the 50s, not sure.

A lot of years later, in the 60s maybe, the near the junction between Oxclose Lane and Edwards Lane there was going to be a bypass road to Leapool roundabout at Redhill and a park and ride at the latter. hence the huge circumference of the roundabout the way it was built. It would have travelled across green belt land adjacent Bestwood Country Park (as it became).

When I was a child living a bit more than halfway up Woodthorpe Drive, my bedroom looked out towards the North west and there was a little wood that Mum and I always used to call 'the blob of jelly' - would this be what you refer to as 'Bendigo's Ring'? (Or am I talking rubbish?). I often thought I'd try and actually find it but never did...

I'm just popping this link here from a few words I wrote about Bestwood some time ago.

There's a huge amount of information provided by visitors who have left messages on the blog, including very much our own member here, DJ360, Colin.

It's become a mine of information over the years with over 260 comments and many subscribed to it.

What year is the photo, as I can't see my house on Hucknall Rd?

I think the photo, is quite a bit earlier than 1936, as there is no sign of the Bestwood estate being built, as the wifes grandparents moved into a house on Gainsford crescent in 1939.

There is also an article in the NEP that mentions houses on Edwards lane estate being occupied in 1927.

#1 You can even see Bell Terrace in Cheltenham Street where my dad and his family were living then.

Sorry forgot to say thanks for the photograph Cliff ton, if you go above the Edwards Lane junction there's a field hedge on the right with a larger bush in it.

I am sat on top of the bush as I type ............well near enough any road.

Between where you are NBL and Bendigo's do you remember 'Scotties Farm' ? we used to go Strawberry picking there early 50s,mind you farmer Scott didn't know..........lol.
