MelissaJKelly 2,120
Mum's siblings mostly have dated names that I doubt will come back 'in'. Sharon, Wendy,Marilyn, Lorraine, Steven, Glenn and David.
.... 23
My maternal grandfather (died before I was born) had an interesting middle name, 'Orbit'. My father's middle name was Archibald which though I thought was not great when I was a kid, I came to understand that, as was often the Scots way, he was named after his mother's maiden name. I loved both my mums Christian names and she was known by both, Grace, Marian. I'm one of those people who is very satisfied with my own name. I wouldn't swap it for anything. It's the name my mum and dad gave to me and reflects quite strongly where I come from.
loppylugs 8,427
Well, David does date back to at least about 700 B.C. Melissa. I'm stuck with it now.
loppylugs 8,427
Orbit. That's an interesting one. If he'd been born today he could have been an astronaut.
.... 23
In those days he had to be content with just playing the piano at the pictures for the silent films.
The Pianoman 1,532
I don't think giving your offspring's a middle name that was your mothers maiden name is necessarily Scottish. My family has a Fanny Stapleton Walker and a William Jeyes Cumberpatch. And then there was Isambard Kingdom Brunel. No Scots! Right selection of names there too! .... 23
I didn't state that it was necessarily Scottish - only that it was a Scottish custom.
carni 10,094
Sometimes a middle name can be the surname of one of the parents if they weren't married at the time of the birth registration. We have two examples in my family tree.
The Pianoman 1,532
Hmm yes. Well you know about mine. William Cumberpatch Harvey. At least for the benefit of my Dad's parents marriage certificate LOL!

Cliff Ton 10,454
The name most closely connected with Nottingham has to be Snot, as in "Snotingaham", the original name for the place. I've never worked with anyone called Snot.
