bamber 128
Well I'd never heard of this before. Apparently there were plans to stage a World's Fair-type exhibition in Nottingham in 1914. The event (obviously) never went ahead but I wondered if other Nottstalgians had ever come across this before?
carni 10,094
Just added this Link to Wikipedia and it is listed but doesn't say why it didn't go ahead. Perhaps to do with the WW1 starting? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_world%27s_fairs
poohbear 1,360
Not heard of that one but a giant exhibition at Trent Bridge was destroyed by fire in !904
DAVIDW 1,683
It was due to be held from May -Oct 1914 on the Victoria Embankment . Millions were expected to attend . I can see adverts in 1913 looking for exhibitors and there is an article on the celebration for when the first sod was cut in November 1913 to start work . However can't see any articles on the cancellation yet .
DAVIDW 1,683
Found something ...it was cancelled due to a lack of financial support from the local council and industry . "Not a farthing" was offered in support . Part of an article here from March 1914 . https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1715/25721027776_f77fe8e42c_b.jpg
Cliff Ton 10,464
In hindsight, it was probably fortunate it didn't happen. It would've coincided with WW1 and the exhibition would either have been cancelled or a complete flop.
carni 10,094
Interesting article David. I see they Had a successful exhibition the following year in 1915
