I always say that if you can afford to have a bet then why not. People can be critical of someone gambling on the horses and then go and spend £20 on the Lottery. I've never been a gambler on the horses or dogs but I do get the Lottery every week. I can remember, when I was a kid, my Dad and eldest brother racing their greyhounds. They'd go to dog tracks all over the place and when they came home they'd empty the money from their pockets onto the table. They'd let me help count the change and give me some money to spend at Mrs Wrights shop across the road the next day.

I can remember them building a wooden shed in the back yard for the greyhounds. It wasn't a normal shed, it took up nearly all of the yard. It's a wonder we managed to get into the toilet, haha. It wasn't there long because they were made to take it down. :)

At one place where I worked they ran a betting scheme on the Grand National. We all put in some money and drew out the name of a horse. I drew out Dark Ivy. Dark Ivy fell at one of the fences and had to be shot. I was quite upset and have never been able to take part in any betting on horses since. My son and his friend have been to a casino a few times. They each went with a fixed amount of cash for the night out and played the tables. They both stopped when they had a bit more money than they went in with and were happy with this. A friend whose daughter works in a casino says that this was the sensible way and the people who lose lots of cash are being greedy. The bottom line is you can only gamble with cash you can afford to lose. This friend says that in Germany people can only play the tables at casinos in a district where they do not live. The restriction is to make it more difficult and try to stop people gambling too much and becoming addicted. Nanny state?

Another friend loves dogs and she gets her pets from the retired greyhound rescue centre.

I have never placed a bet in my life, I wouldn't know how to.

My dad on the other hand lived & died for the horses & dogs, suppose thats why it never interested me.

I do like to "invest" in the occasional excursion to the Lime kiln tho ! hellothere

Thanks for your tips Ian, hope you enjoy picking them and hopefully not losing - some people don't realise that having a flutter, be it on horses or any sport can be enjoyable without losing you lots of money.

Plenty of pastimes cost you and you get nothing in return except enjoyment.

Not quite to do with this thread, but near enough. A chap I worked with, in his younger days, used to go to Blackpool with his friend, who worked in a bookies. They used to go to a place that had talent shows - anyone could get up on the stage and sing, or whatever. This chap used to give a commentary of a fictitious horse race. He had names for all of the horses and riders. Shouting 'There off!' he then commentated at a canter who was in the lead, who was on the rails, who was gaining ground, etc, just like what you hear on the radio. As the race progressed his tempo quickened and he had the audience with him all the way. Nearing the end his delivery was machine-gun-like and the audience had by then chosen who they would like to win. He did not forget the names of the horses or riders right up to the winning-post. I cannot remember whether he won the competition.

While on the subject of the bobbos, we've not heard from Echo for 6 months now. Wonder how her son is getting on at work. Would love an update.

Collected €80.00 for a €25.00 lay out!

So, I spent €25.00 per day x4= 100 euro spent at the festival.

Return for that €100 and the horses I posted was €211.80 give or take a few cents.

Hope you followed, if just for fun!!

Roll on Aintree.
