benjamin1945 16,139
Just for your interest Ian and probably before your time, there was an old friend of my Dads think his name was Joe Page an ex Railway man, lived on Teviot. Anyway he was a great big bloke and was a 'Bookies Runner' for Nellie Bisby's shop on Arnold road, who was the unofficial bookie, and big Joe was a well known figure cycling all over Bestwood estate collecting Bets,..........most of which i would imagine were a Tanner EW. Guest
My bookie in the 80's was Tote or Stanley on Arnold rd.bottom of Gainsford. If I got a winner it went in The Heathfield. Will ask about Joe Benjamin, he probably was a well known character... I do remember Ted Parsons and the Parson family.

jonab 1,644
I placed a bet on a horse once, a very long time ago. It lost. That was the end of my interest in gambling.
philmayfield 6,115
Gambling is a mug’s game. I knew someone who only backed favourites and still made a loss over the year. I live about 3 miles from Southwell racecourse and have been once in 56 years.
philmayfield 6,115
I did know someone back in the late 60’s who did quite well on the horses. As I recollect his name was George Akins. I may be wrong.
