Lizzie i'm on about day 5 of writing with my wrong hand ie the right..........I also thought we don't write much nowadays,....but with having my 'shaky problem' its dawned on me how much we still write.......sign for a delivery........sign in hotel.or anywhere,......fill a form out.......write down details from a phone call........fill in peoples names at work..do a crossword.....even tick a prescription form.........and with the work I now do.....writing down peoples details......just can't do it with my left (writing hand).......so on this regime of writing with wrong hand...........just don't feel natural and my brain keeps sending me messages telling me so.

 

                   Never the less I am pursuing it ,they say it takes 1 to 2 months to start to feel proficient,....at day 5 my writing looks like a 6 year olds,.......ive made a joke of it for a few years.......but it did start to get embarrassing in Interviewing people,........we take things like being able to write properly for granted............

And what about that "writing" you have to do when you sign for a parcel delivery. You are handed a small plastic stick and asked to write your signature on a shiny plastic square which is about 3 inches wide.  It's impossible to come up with anything vaguely recognisable.

Obviously not having a personal 'dig' at you Loppy, but your post raises some interesting issues.

 

I spent around 8 years working with kids in a Special School for those with 'Moderate Learning Difficulties.'   Many of the kids had these learning difficulties because they had other issues.  Health stuff, rare 'syndromes', or sensory impairments which held them back.  But some also just came from inadequate homes, where parents weren't providing the supportive environment which the kids needed.  Homes where work wasn't the norm and books were just not seen, for example.

 

But what I learned over time was that it wasn't as simple as just blaming the parents for being 'uncaring'.

 

The reality was that the parents mostly had their own problems.  They may also have learning difficulties, health issues, disabilities etc.

 

I had one lad who had massive anger management issues.  Yet he was mostly very bright and resourceful.  He lived at home, where there were holes in doors and walls which he had caused through anger.  His Dad had been locked up at one point for hitting him, because he was threatening his Mum.  His Mum just blamed herself for it all because whilst pregnant she had taken a drug to prevent epilepsy, which, unbeknown to her.. had affected the unborn lad.

It's very hard to put ourselves in these situations, but what I found almost without exception, was that the parents, from their point of view, were doing their best.

 

And more importantly, they loved their kids.

 

I could quote many more examples, and I'm not saying that there are no 'chavvy' parents, but I found that it is often very much a case of 'There.. but for fortune..'

"Do you know who I am" is a phrase that brings back memories. In the '87 snow storm (Christams time) we had thousands of people off supply and were working 18/19 hours a day getting the netowrk back up and running. Most people were great bringing cups of tea, offers of whatever food they had etc. One lady, the wife of a 'Sir' demanded we reconnect her IMMEDIATELY as she had guests for Christmas lunch arriving and we had beter attend to it or she would have words with her  'good friend' our chairman. "Don't you know who I am" she said. No ma'am but we will do our very best.... later, like next day later guess who lived in the last house to be connected.

Regarding the recent debate about children, upbringing, parents and opportunities etc, there seems to be two trains of thought here.

The glass half full believers , and the glass half empty believers. It'll never be resolved, but it was a good theme to debate.

Jill, regarding oafs, I was just generalising. I fully appreciate that is not always the case.

You can make any mark they work on GPS when you've said you've not had it, it can pinpoint exactly where it was signed for 'On your door step' covers you & the delivery bloke.

Back to the original post regarding students having wrist bands with their name and address on in case they over indulge, and can't find their way home. There is some sad news this morning that a female fresher at the Uni of Kent has been found dead after only one day since she began her course. No cause of death was quoted, but I dread to think about what her parents are going through.

Im afraid I never considered mine 50 odd years ago when I used to come home at all hours, be sick in bed, or not even come home at all.

Dreadful.  I daren't even imagine how her parents feel, whatever the cause turns out to be.

 

Fortunately for us, both of our girls seem to have been well aware of the effects of booze before they went to Uni.

 

 

I well recall the oldest one trying to get rid of us after we dropped her in halls at Hull Uni.  She was panicking that she wouldn't get to the refectory for the evening meal and would not meet any friends.  A few hours later we were on the phone to her from home.  Late evening.  When we enquired as to what the noise was she replied it was her friends.  They were all in her room toasting all of her bread and having toast and jam.  She went on to share accommodation with three of them throughout uni and they remain friends.  She even went around the world with one of them.. including a 6 month stay in Australia.

 

I also think we need to be wary of the stereotype that all students are p!$$ed out of their brains 24/7.  As far as I can tell there are about 50000 HE students in Nottm, across Nottm Uni and Trent Uni.  I reckon if all 50000 were to descend on Nottm City Centre every night.. then you really would notice...    Also worth notiing that when you add up all the booze, food, general shopping and accomodation fees paid out by students, it is a huge contribution to the economy of any town.

 

No degree course.. 'Mickey Mouse' or not.. is easy and it is necessary to actually turn up for the odd lecture and also do a lot of self directed study.  My youngest worked harder than anybody I know on her Fashion degree.  She was often in the Library into the smalls hours of the morning because it was quieter and she could concentrate better.  Fortunately, there was an escort system, which would supply a chap to escort students of either sex back to their halls from the Library in the night.  A very sensible thing IMHO.

Col, just one thing needs clarifying, and that is the misconception that students are constantly pi55ed. I don't believe it for one moment, and I cannot recall it ever being implied on here. I certainly don't think that anybody on NS stereotypes them. 

Also, I love watching University Challenge, and although there are some odd and eccentric bu66ers, I don't think anyone has ever been drunk.

You raise some valid points.  Some of it gets into the spiritual, but I'm not going there for obvious reasons.  I don't profess to have all the answers and maybe I am too pessimistic, but it seems to me that Western civilization is on a collision course with the wall.

Point taken.  Poor wording on my part, but there does seem to be a wider propagation of the myth via some media.  As for university challenge.  I never miss it if I can help it.  It may be my imagination/prejudices taking over, but it does seem to me that there are a few more Tarquins and Jeremys from from the Home Counties amongst the contestants again.  Like it was back in the 60's.  Mrs Col has made a similar comment.

Just read that school teachers in several states in the US are again discouraging kids to have 'Best Friends', as it tends to alienate, isolate, disorientate  and hurt other kids who don't have a best friend. They are all being encouraged to have groups of friends. 

What utter twaddle. Just let kids choose what they want, and who to be friends with !

I had a few best friends at school, but also a wider group of other friends. 

Why for heavens sake don't they just do what they're paid to do... TEACH !

Just another sign of the times, Fly.  I don't recall any interference from anybody re. Who was friends with who.  It's the same kind of idiocy that wants to give every kid a prize just for taking part in some activity.  Makes a prize for those who do well at it meaningless.  No incentive to do well everybody gets a prize.  . Maybe they need to be doing a little more research on why some disgruntled kid goes in and shoots up the school.
