jonab 1,644
Wasn't/isn't the Red Cross HQ near the Dunkirk FS? I remember doing a first aid course there in the 1970's. (On reflection, it may have been St John's Ambulance).

I was a member of the Junior Red Cross and went to the new building on numerous occasions. I don't know whether it still stands.
philmayfield 6,130
I think the Red Cross building was on the corner of Abbey Bridge Rd. and Lenton Lane facing the White Hart but on ‘Streetview’ it appears to have been demolished.

Jill Sparrow 10,305
Derby Road, CT. This came up in a thread a while back. It was at the end of a Georgian terrace near where The Octagon was built. Philmayfield is correct about the location of the new HQ.
Cliff Ton 10,465
Now you've mentioned it, I remember the Octagon thread https://nottstalgia.com/forums/topic/15867-the-octagon-and-its-predecessor/? And the 'new' Red Cross building was mentioned here https://nottstalgia.com/forums/topic/9777-a-bit-of-old-lenton-disappears/ Unfortunately, both threads have been ruined by Photobucket. I might take a look at them later.....
trogg 2,016
LizzeM thanks I knew I was old, I used to go round all the stations regularly and knew most of them, after I retired I never went on a station for about 7 years, I then went on one where I served for 10 years and I didn't know a soul and they all looked young boys. When central closed all people who had served there where invited for a final photo, the only ones I knew were retired, they felt the same way. When all the retired ones had had a group photo taken all serving members were asked to join in the photo, some bright spark shouted out come on children on here with us.
PeverilPeril 3,281
Woodthorpe House? Is that now the Sherwood Community Centre? Looks like the same building I used as a teenager (50's) but the grounds were full of trees and shrubs then.

Notable for not really being very near any housing. I think it was a legacy from the days when railway companies were buildings as many lines as possible without thinking if they were actually needed. This photo shows what became its main purpose - difficult to read, but the lower part of the sign says "Alight here for Trent Bridge Cricket and Football Grounds".
benjamin1945 16,158
Remember being very young about 5, and looking out the train window and seemed to be very high up and looking down at lights,,and asking ''Where are we Grandad ?......Nottingham mate'' but we don't get off yet,two more stations''.........think it must have been ''High-level''.........got off at either Bulwell Common or Basford and Bulwell stations,,.......Grandad had free passes being a Railwayman,,and him and Grandma' took me all over the country,.......i was a lucky lad to have such wonderful elders.........

catfan 14,793
Had an excursion to tahn this morning on my favourite mode of transport, the train ! Bulwell to Midland station 10 minutes only, the tram on steroids couldn't match that. Did notice the old Portland Hotel on Carington Street looks an absolute eyesore with dirty old net curtains hung up at every window. Wondered why, then realised they are these days Student Lets. Say no more. An early picture from the '60s ?

MargieH 7,600
Great picture of Harlow Wood hospital. Even when I was working there (1960 - 62) certain wards had the facility to push beds outside in good weather - there were red blankets to use when outdoors. The outside space was primarily there for children suffering from TB, as sunlight and fresh air was part of the treatment (along with good food, streptomycin injections and 2 oral drugs). When I was there, some of the children had TB but this was presenting in their spine or joints. A certain person on here was a patient on the Ward in the photo, I think, but several decades later than 1920!!
jonab 1,644
The Harlow Wood picture reminded me of Newstead Sanitorium/Hospital (very close to Harlow Wood) which specialised in TB treatment and where my Dad was a patient in the 1950's. At Newstead, not only did they have the beds outside in good weather but also seemed to have the big windows open all year round. Saved on heating bills, I suppose. This was in the early days of treatment with streptomycin, PAS, INH and they worked.
