A Road that Had Everything - Mansfield Rd

There was a great dentist on Mansfield Road: Mr Arksey. He was part of a practice with a number of others until the late 1960s when he moved to his own practice on Private Road. There he had private patients but he still looked after my teeth very well as a NHS patient. Even after I left Nottingham I still went back to him and had my yearly appointment when he did the checkup, clean and polish and any drilling and filling I needed. He gave up his practice in 1982 and moved to the Queen's Medical Centre. An excellent professional and a nice man.

In 1969 I went to BSM on Mansfield Road for driving lessons. The instructor was a young lady who was always beautifully dressed so I would also get dressed up. When we drove around in the summer with the windows down (no air-con then) the road workmen used to wolf whistle! We would laugh. Today this would be an issue. How times change.

I found a dead body on Mansfield Road once. It was in the early’70’s – times of great industrial unrest with three-day weeks, strikes, persistent power cuts and such.   It was a Saturday, mi

This thread had a lot of photos which were ruined by Photobucket's ransomware. I've just repaired most of them.

A quick run through PTP brought out a few examples from the 70s / 80s.

Ian you have a fantastic memory. I lived on Huntingdon St right opposite the school. I remember a few of the shops but cant remember much else. But you are 20 yrs my junior !!! Mind you we only lived there for about 5 yrs and then went to live in Sherwood. Remember the " big yard " as we called it opening onto Fulforth st. One day whilst we were playing everyone was veering out of the yard and what we saw was frightening for us. There was a horse ( or donkey!) which had been injured and there was blood everywhere . Cant remember what happened to it. We played marbles, ran up and down the fire escape. Dont know who that belonged to. Two older boys loved playing darts and took it in turn to stand against a garage door and the other one would aim and throw the darts. One day the one throwing , missed the door and hit the other one on his legs. He was badly hurt . Nasty when you are a child and see something like that.

You're quite right Shirley, delivering to building sites just before I retired I often saw signs warning site operatives that wolf whistling is a disciplinary offence.

In my day women loved the attention, sadly these days it is not allowed.

How true Mick,I do recall when the builders were finishing Northern Rock opposite the Vic Hotel- there was always a whistle or some banter...and that was for me Mam!...bit of a spring in her step afterwards.

Brilliant Cliff! Your input on this site is beyond words.

That Commer van carried huge pole ladders and scaffolding, Northern Rock next to the boutique.. we used to pester the building society staff for purple 'savings bug' stickers.

Was it Haslams or Akins turf accountants further on?

Trueman's and Dolphin Motors and the Keys and moulin cinema all gave way to a new Sissons and a tax office.

Panda escort mk1,and a Vauxhall Ferenga...bought at Clifton I wonder?

Was Trumans place the one on the corner of Bluecote (Bluecoat) Street pictured at #30?

I posted this before somewhere else, but it fits here as well.

Susyshoes. The car park entrance on Fulforth st. Used to be my play ground, we called it the big yard. We lived on Hundingdon st and the houses backed their back yards onto this yard. It was all cobbled with big wooden gates at the end which I suppose was private parking for Farrands. I also remember there being a fire escape there. Maybe the back of Farrands. Cant remember if there was anything between Farrands and the yard. I posted a few days ago on this very subject. Looking at these gates and on the right hand side the yard became an entry. The houses on Mansfield rd backed their back yards onto this entry. We always used to wait for the local doctor who would garage his car in a private garage, he would let us stand on the runners of his car to give us a lift into the garage. Dr Carson was his name. Hed always got a smile for us. To me at that tender age the big yard seemed enormous but seeing it many years after it actually quite small.

Re: Fulforth Street. I posted these in another thread showing Fulforth Street in the 1970s. Both are looking towards Mansfield Road with the Golden Fleece visible (and still there today).

I am not sure if it was above or below the Peel Street junction, but on the west side of Mansfield Road there was a yard leading off the pavement with a fairly narrow entrance - I'd widened out and then in the middle of the back was a flight of stone steps leading up to a full width balcony with cast iron railings - from which led an alley to somewhere else. I as small boy always wanted to see where it went was was always told 'it was private'. Does anyone know where it went - and are there any photos?
