philmayfield 6,089
Many years ago I went to a restaurant on Mansfield Rd. I think it was on the corner of Chatham St. which leads up to the Arboretum. I believe it was called 'The Old England'. They specialised totally in traditional English dishes like steak and kidney pie, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and suchlike. No foreign rubbish was served!
Jill Sparrow 10,269
The Olde English restaurant opened in the mid 70s I believe. Went for a Christmas meal there around 1976.
philmayfield 6,089
'Olde English'. That's right Jill. I wasn't dreaming it!
Cliff Ton 10,435
The BSM on Mansfield Road, along with the taxi office, the Olympic kebab place, and another I can't remember.
Beekay 5,094
Looking at your work history Ben, couldn't you keep a job down? or maybe you adopted the theory, "It's harder to hit a moving target". ( though it appears someone managed).
catfan 14,793
This thread "A Road That Had Everything "Mansfield Road" was originally started by Ian123, NOT Stu. Stu had a few personal problems in his life at the time & that is why he backed out from NS. Nothing to do with Scotish independance at all.
philmayfield 6,089
I noticed last week there was an Ethiopian restaurant over the road from the previous picture. I thought they were all starving In Ethiopia. Perhaps they serve very small portions?
Rob.L 1,084
They were starving. But that was in 1984. 36 years ago.

LizzieM 9,497
You have my full admiration Ben. I know how stressful it is being an employer and to keep 100 people happy, in employment (and under control!) is difficult and a 24/7 worry and I know you found it difficult giving it all up.

IAN FINN 792
Four quid for a hair cut ask him how much for a shave when he says two pound tell him to shave your head.
mary1947 2,071
IAN £4 for a hair cut but you ask him to shave your head as it's only £2 maybe, just maybe you would only get half done.

benjamin1945 16,118
I was amazed when a Barber moved into the ex Sally Army charity shop in Bulwell,,,,thought no its too big and they won't make it pay......but everytime i pass it its always busy.....Its good to hear of businesses moving into high streets and making it pay. Thinking about it,most of the new Barbers today seem to do a lot of shaving,,,with the sharp beards and tashes being very popular nowadays,,,and they do charge proper money for these........Its only old Pensioners like me that pay 4,5 or 6 pound,,hardly owt to take off. Always enjoyed my trip to the Barbers and the Banter that goes with it,,,i'm still useing Geezers in Bulwell main street,,went yesterday pensioner price gone up to £6,,,but the ladies are lovely ,so its worth it................. PeverilPeril 3,268
Short hairstyles and baldy's are the reason for the explosion of salons. Youngsters get their hair cut/stylised every week! Every month is enough for me.

MargieH 7,594
I have cut Paul's hair for 30- 40 years now ..... think of the money we've saved! Our sons both shave their heads themselves and they look good. It's only in the past year that I've started to go to a hairdresser after cutting my own hair for over 40 years. My eyes aren't good enough to see the finer points now and I even had to ask Paul to cut the hair level at the back. Mostly I used to cut my hair by touch, anyway- sounds weird I know, but you just 'know your own hair'.
