I currently run 3 forums using phpBB, a freebie. Have far less strife than with proprietary software as it gets lots of community support. Run 2 Linux webservers at home where I am able to test and document upgrades before they go public. Having worked out what needs to be done and their order, successfully, I then take a site down for 24 hours whilst I implement the changes. Just takes a very methodical mind.
