Carlton rd/Carlton Hill memories

Recommended Posts

As mentioned before Nottingham has so many stretches of road that hold memories for most of us,and the one ive thought about this morning is Carlton road starting at the Sneinton end up to the Toby Jug on top...........Pubs I mostly recall are 'White lion' and early 60s playing 'Ricky Nelson' teenage idol on the Juke box, then the 'Duke of Cambridge' before it was a 'topless barmaid venue mentioned before......then the March Hare' with its live bands.

Carlton rd also has special memories for me,as my Great Grandparents lived on Kemps Cottages, long demolished, situated opposite the King Edward park,.......also happy times working on Carlton rd at Marsdens just past St.Mathias rd going up the hill, think the old sign is still there...........then in the 90s working at the Coops, small one  near the Toby Jug and the Supermarket corner of St.Mathias, where I had the pleasure of having several teeth removed..lol.also previously mentioned................happy days..................

Yes a shame really cliff-ton........I worked there a lot ,it was always very busy in every way, don't understand Coop in the way it pulled out of so many good sites,it was violent at times for us, could go on about many incidents there, but my abiding memory of the place were some great staff who were a pleasure to work with..............

Not sure if it was same with Nottm Co-op but the one I worked for  ( in  ah-em Derbys ! )  had a board made up of people from random walks of life.....so you might have a postman or a miner making retailing decisions with absolutely no experience of running a shop .

In the early days of my working life, I worked in two separate places along that lower end of Carlton Road.

One on Dakeyne Street (up the side of the park) which was a printers who mainly did "Adult Contact Magazines" (this was the early 80s). I used to stick white dots over the rude bits in photos.

And my other employment in that area was at Hooton Street in the late 70s; all perfectly respectable there.

Did a lot of work for Midlands Co-op David in the early 0's in their shops in Derbyshire and Leicestershire, got on very well with a Lady in charge of their Security whose name escapes me,her number 2 was a bloke named David Gibbons another nice chap, and their was a chap based at a depot in Leicester who again was good to deal with ex Police I think .........

#2.

Never understood the Coop closing that one either, that set me thinking tho. Think of all the Coop's that have gone in recent times. Who'd have thought that the Bulwell one would go ?

Sky high, crippling business rates perhaps ?

Finally found it. On the edge of the photo because that's as far as it goes. The road diagonally across the centre is Carlton Road.

Is that the old lunatic asylum, then?

As a young kid my stomping ground was from Cardale Road down to Dakeyne Street. I remember the doctors on the corner of Dakeyne Street - poor Dr. Dillon always looked to be in desparate need of medical attention himself. He always looked very sallow and unwell.

Occasional forays to King Edward Park, but home turf was from maybe Woodhouse Street onwards. Marsden’s grocery shop, pre supermarkets. Johnny Wells’s newsagents where we bought our penny bangers and comics (I have a vague idea he killed himself). A little further up was the bus stop where we stood with our Guy Fawkes, begging coppers off the people getting off the bus. The pork butcher’s (Sandersons?) where grandma bought tripe, chitterlings and brawn. Miss Walker’s sweet shop, the chippy where we called for our free batter bits coming home from a day in Colwick Woods.

That bloody air raid siren on top of Cooper and Roe’s factory which they occasionally tested, frightening me to death.

The wooden off-licence (Don’s) where we’d exchange our stolen Persil money-off coupons for single Park Drives. Apparently hit by a bomb in WW2 and re-built as a large shed! I seem to remember a similar on on Thorneywood Rise - perhaps the Luftwaffe had a thing about offies!

Walking home on a winter tea time from my Grandma’s on Cropwell Green, hoping Mam had got home from work and lit the fire. When I got to the big tree, top-side of Manvers School I knew I was nearly there (the stump is still there, surrounded by its bit of broken stone wall).

Perhaps not totally happy days, but many very fond memories

Here's the photo slightly repositioned, to give a wider view and some of the places you mentioned. The old Asylum is the white building across the centre-right, off Dakeyne Street.

If you haven't already discovered, the asylum has its own thread.  https://nottstalgia.com/forums/topic/12756-sneinton-asylum/?

Hi Mary,

The name rings a slight bell, but I didn't go to Manvers, I'm afraid!

My sentence for passing the 11+ at Hogarth School (now the Hindu community centre) was to be exiled to Mundella, where I did 5 years hard-labour, mostly in solitary.

Have toyed with the idea of coming to a meeting, but haven't managed it yet, perhaps this year.

Probably only the recent addition of kids facilities, and those keep fit contraptions.

King Edwards Park, with Alfred St South on the left I believe. The tram tracks running in from the left was from Handel St.

Remember it well, as I lived up Garnet St off Gordon  Rd in the early 50's. All now long gone.

The old Co-op near St Mathias Road seems to have been empty longer than it was ever operating.
