A Up from me - a newbie

Recommended Posts

Hi all - I've been a reader of this site for some while and decided to take the plunge and join up today! I'm a Nottingham gel born and bred but left to live in Derbyshire ( I know - don't tell me!!) in 1988 but always see Nottm as my home and always will. I was born in Babbington Cottages as my Dad was a miner at the pit. Lived off Alfreton Road later and when I got with my boyfriend (now my husband of 40 years) who was from Chilwell lived in Thorneywood, Mapperley, Chilwell and then moved in 1988 due to my fellas work - I went to Manning and worked at Boots Station Street in 1974-1981. We have always been into Northern Soul: my old man at VaVas firstly and then all over. I started at Creepers (Basford Hall Miners Welfare) and Brit, Colmans, Palais, Derby Venues, Wigan Casino, Cleethorpes etc etc.  I like reading all the nostalgia and love this site as its like going back home X

I heard someone on the radio singing Cwm Rhondda this morning. Well it is Sunday. It's been stuck in my head ever since so I've had to take drastic action to oust it. This is the result. I'm sure you

Just fished out my school report book. Yes, I still have it and it is 47 years ago to this very date that I spent my first day at the Manning.   I see from the reports in the book that I had

I feel inspired to add my own tribute to my old alma mater. The tune is well known, please feel free to join in. Apologies to any left wing members for misappropriation of their anthem.   TH

Welcome Shaz58 to Nottstalgia. You'll love this site.

I too am a former Manning girl. I may have known you, as we are around the same age, I was born at the end of 57.

My mother was friends with a girl whose father managed the Babington pit and lived in a house close to it. His surname was Tomlin.

Small world. Look forward to sharing your memories.

Sharon, been trying to think of Sharons at the Manning but could only think of a Sharon Prior. I must have known you but can't recall the name Wilson.

My memories of Manning are on here somewhere...none of em very complimentary!!! Look forward to hearing yours. We must have been in different forms but if you mention the names of some other girls you remember it'll jog my memory.

They knocked the place down, you know! Yippee!!!

Got you now Shaz58! When I first read your post, I mentally saw the image of a girl with black hair in Manning uniform. Although I didn't recognise the name Wilson, now I've seen your photo, you are the same girl I thought of. Would you remember Hilary Hunt as being in your form? Others would be Helen Greener and a girl named Hazel.

My forms were 1L and 5C I can't remember the rest! I am friends on face book with Anita Leigh who told me that Helen Greener had sadly died recently

I will look at the Manning posts and add my bit (sounds about the same as your view)

its nice to catch up X

Ye gods, sorry to hear about Helen Greener!

Other names you may recall would be Julie Minns, Elizabeth Blach and the twins, Catherine and Elizabeth ?

I've used pseudonyms for the teachers in my memories of the school. Don't want to get sued for libel if they're still alive, although every word is true!

Look forward to reading your experiences.

Hello and welcome. My Mother was also born in Babbington Cottages as her Dad worked at the pit!- but that was in 1930!

I bet the cottages were the same then as when I was born ! Thanks for the welcome

I remember Julie Minns and the twins Catherie and Elizabeth Moore - the twins were in my forms and very sporty (which I wasn't) !

My Mother was born at No 3 Babbington Cottages. They moved up(?) to Minver Crescent when she was only weeks old. I believe the move was because those cottages that were nearer the Cinderhill Road end were due for demolition. I *think* they stood empty after 1930. I certainly remember them standing derelict in the 1960's. Every time we drove past my Mother would remark 'I was born in that one'.

Welcome Shaz58.

I see you have a cat ! You have taste !

Indeed we have ! We had one for 16 years and he sadly died about 8 years ago. We have just had a new kitten and he is a proper little Lord of the manor already!

I was born at No 6 in 1958 and we moved up the Road to The Elms (it had just moved from Pit ownership to the council) in the early 60s - can't remember the exact date but I remember being in the cottages the day Kennedy was shot! There was 6 of us in 2 bedrooms - I had 3 older brothers too
