philmayfield 6,134
Just had a couple of Jehovah's Witnesses come up the drive. I've not seen any of those for a long time. The alarm went off and they were spotted on camera. I was all prepared for them but they just shoved a leaflet through the letterbox and went away. Disappointed really! MargieH 7,600
Just watched 'Years and Years' - the first of the 6 part drama on BBC 1... I know it's fiction but it was scary stuff... pleased I'm on my way out, but fear for our young ones! In 15 years when I'm 91, if I'm still around, will I still care about the state of the world, I wonder.
HSR 286
Was it the Sweeney or the The Professionals or both where the good guys always drove Ford's..The bad in something British normally Jag's? early product placement? Do recall Reagan having a white mini in one episode.
Rob.L 1,090
It was both of them, as Ford were quite pushy about getting their cars on TV. Hence the Sweeney had Granadas and the Professionals had Escort RS and Capri. Unlike BMC, who apparently refused to supply Minis to the Italian Job film makers.

The Sunbeam Alpine became the first Bond car in Dr No and I think I read somewhere that the Rootes Group were asked to provide free cars for Goldfinger but the sales execs did not think it would amount to much publicity or generate sales so they declined. Didn't Maxwell Smart drive a Sunbeam Tiger?

jopip 31
The producers of 'The Saint' wanted a British car for Roger Moore portraying Simon Templer & approached Jaguar to supply a vehicle. The producers explained that the show would be weekly & expected a wide audience throughout Britain & possibly overseas thereby giving Jaguar a massive promotion & advertising platform simply by supplying a car. Jaguar responded by saying "we at Jaguar do not give away our cars! If you want a car then you will have to buy one" Volvo heard about this & informed the production team that they would not only supply a car to assist the making of the show, but would also supply another car for the personal use of Mr. Moore. Furthermore they would cut a car in half to enable interior shots of Mr, Moore behind the wheel, As a result the Volvo reg. ST1 received promotion & advertising that no car manufacturer could hope to buy & the model became a classic. The Swedes obviously had greater insight & forward thinking than the'good old British' establishment within the British car industry. 4
denshaw 2,872
Apparently the woman that owned the number plate ST1 did quite well from it. 1
FLY2 10,108
It was an astute business move several years ago regarding Volvo trucks. Volvo allegedly bought up loads of second hand trucks, in order to deplete the market, just as they were about to reveal a brand new model !

denshaw 2,872
Did the same thing happen with Bond films? Aston Martins were used a few times.

AM still do have an association with the Bond brand. They’re even making a few “new” DB5s with most of the toys for wealthy clients. Only £3m each! https://www.topgear.com/car-news/movies/everything-you-need-know-about-astons-new-goldfinger-db5s#
philmayfield 6,134
I’ve just been talking to the guys at Sherwood Restorations, our local classic car dealer in Southwell. I often go in for a chat and to kick a few tyres. They’ve got a Sunbeam Alpine in for a complete restoration and they have just sold a fully restored Sunbeam Tiger of 1965 vintage which was advertised at £84,995!
Oztalgian 3,292
You can get a Tiger her for between 54,000 and 75,000 quid for a recent restoration, Business opportunity for someone as cars here do not have to endure salt on the roads in winter.
jopip 31
Not sure exactly why Aston Martin was chosen for the Bond films when Bonds choice in the Flemings books was Bentley. If Bentley was approached maybe their reaction was the same as Jaguar when asked by the producers of The Saint. I can't see Bentley giving away 2 cars & slicing one in half.
