Building on corner of Carrington Street and Canal Street

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

New member here, hope people can help with a question I have!

I'm trying to find out about the boarded up building on the corner of Carrington street and Canal street. It's up for sale at the moment and the down stairs has previously been used to exhibit art. Let me know if this is enough to identify it?

At one point I'm told it was used as an early drive through petrol station, I've seen an old photo of this and I just find it facinating!

Can anyone give me anymore information about this, does anyone have any photo's or stories about the place?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum little carrie.  It's along time since I went down there but I do recall that there was a bookshop on the corner (where Cliff Ton's shows) after the filling station was closed.

I can also just about remember the filling station as a kid. Used to traipse past it on a Sat'day going into town with mam.  It was a job centre for quite a while, '70s-80s.

@Cliff Ton yes, thats the one. Thank you! Do you remember the name of the petrol station at all?

@DaveN and @TBIJust so I've got this timeline right, it was a filling station, then a book shop and after a job centre or where those last two incarnations the other way round?

I'm so impressed people replied so quickly!

There is a picture on Pinterest, little_carrie, don't know if it's the one you refer to. Can't make out the name above, might be Carrington Street Filling Station. The actual shop on the corner, Daisy Howard looks like a ladieswear shop. 'Curtis' on the second floor with a Remington Rand sign? Looks to be mid-sixties.

Up until 1938 it could have been Cullen's Drapery Stores .

I say could have , as I'm not sure which corner it was on .

One advert gives the number 57-59 Carrington St. for Cullen's.

1949 , 57-59 Carrington St was a branch of Rains Electrical Stores

Rains was indeed at 57-59 as shown on the map. It can be seen on various images of Carrington St. Cullens was also in the same place earlier, fits with those dates. Neither of course on the corner in question.

Is it just me, or is anyone else having recent difficulty finding pics on PTP, which I know are there?

Great memories of having work done at MM,always took auto electrical parts there for repair from the garage I worked at, best bloke to get your job done was Nello although the other guys were just as good but I was always told to "See Nello",

He's the one Ian, the boss at the garage I worked at insisted on me seeing Nello if ever I went there, think they might have been at school or in the forces together

I think next to Catlin and Goldsmiths there was a carburetor specialist, can't remember the name off hand but they repaired/setup a lot of them twin choke Webbers that were popular in the 60's/70's/80's, SU and CD carbs we set up ourselves in the garage, all the other stuff we just re-jetted and fiddled with mixture screws until the spark plug tips colour came right,

Can anyone remember those clear plastic ? substitute spark plugs we used to fit to see what colour the fuel/air mixture was burning like then set the carb until you got the right colour burn (if you know what I mean),I was useless at setting carbs that way because of being hoplessly colour blind, I could set a carb by ear/smell of exhaust/reaction time from the throttle

Gunstones Colourtune plugs. I think I have one lurking in the workshop. I've got a load of their other gear as well at the back of a cupboard.

Got one o them and the timing light. Redundant nowadays with ecus all over the car!!

Motor cars today tell you all that stuff and more through their computer, nice to hang on to the old stuff though Phil, never know when someone wants an old motor setting up

Yes, I have got an OBD reader but not used it since I had a 2002 Lotus Elise. There are more sophisticated ones that connect from the OBD port to your mobile with a suitable app. When my virtually new car broke down last year the AA used a very sophisticated one which said that the alternator had failed. It took 3 trips and 3 tows to the dealer to convince them though!
