I’ve found a timing light, a carb balancer, a compression tester, something to stick up the exhaust to measure emissions and a meter to tell you just about everything!

Motor cars today tell you all that stuff and more through their computer, nice to hang on to the old stuff though Phil, never know when someone wants an old motor setting up

Yes, I have got an OBD reader but not used it since I had a 2002 Lotus Elise. There are more sophisticated ones that connect from the OBD port to your mobile with a suitable app. When my virtually new car broke down last year the AA used a very sophisticated one which said that the alternator had failed. It took 3 trips and 3 tows to the dealer to convince them though!

It is if the operator is sufficiently intelligent to interpret it

Yes it was the alternator. 3 trips on the back of an AA truck confirmed it.
