Margie, the mother of a school friend of mine had first one and then both legs removed due to the problem you describe as gangrene had set in. Ā She was only in her Ā late 60s/early 70s. Terrible thing to happen to anyone. I suspect that heavy smoking was a major factor as I never saw her without a cigarette. Ā In those days, people didn't seem to know any better.

knew a bloke who had a leg amputated under local anesthetic because of his dicky heart.Ā

All went well he said & never felt a thing. Worse part he said was hearing his leg being sawn off.Ā  !

A case of Wide Eyed and Legless....as the song said!

Carfan, have you any idea when Ken Henley was at Bilborough?

Not sure but when Bilborough shut he came to Bulwell. He was a driver for years at Bilborough.

His wife worked at Player's for years

Catfan, I'm afraid I've no knowledge of when Bilborough depot shut up shop. I left in 1967 to venture further afield, but still inĀ Nottingham.

Catfan, same as Paul. Ā His foot is always cold and often he canā€™t feel his toes properly. Ā They tried to insert stents in his artery but the blockage was too long and they gave up. Ā His peripheral arteries have taken over quite well though. Ā He was told to keep exercising through any pain which he does. Ā Heā€™s found that not walking too briskly and resting for short breaks in between really helps. Ā He can still play table tennis and smash most of theĀ opposition as well.

Ā

In winter, as I've got older IĀ suffer from Raynaud's disease,Ā in either my feet or various fingers (it's not fussy).

Ā

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raynaud_syndrome

Ā

In my feet it's only there for 15-20Ā  minutes at a time and then it goes away without me doing anything; with fingers it can be for longer.

I do remember being told inĀ our study times that smoking was a Ā major cause of the condition. Ā Diet was never mentioned norĀ any other factorsā€¦. Ā My Paul stopped smoking over 40 years ago,Ā his diet is mainlyĀ healthy and he has always been an active person, so I think there must be other factors at workā€¦.

@Cliff TonĀ one of our sons has Raynaudā€™s in his hands - he has some special gloves to wear when itā€™s cold weather.

I believe severe cases can have a minor op near their shoulder which may help, but I donā€™t know much about thatĀ

I think the Queen's father, George VI suffered the same problem. I've read that, during meetings, he would get up from his chair and bash his leg against the wall or a piece of furniture because he had lost all sensation in it. He did this with such violence at times that those who witnessed it were shocked he didn't injure himself.

Ā

Although it wasn't made public at the time, he lost a lung due to cancer and it had probably spread to the remaining one. Ā He was a known chain smoker and also a heavy drinker, especially during the stress of the war years. Yet, as a young man, he had been extremely fit and was regarded as a professional level tennis player.

Ā

I think it has long been known that smoking is a killer. Nottingham being the home of Player's and employing so many people possibly didn't do them any favours.

My mum suffered from Raynauld's all her life. Ā As a child, I can remember seeing her fingers turn pure white! Ā

Ā

For a few months, over the winter of 2016/7, it started to affect me. I just couldn't get warm. Shortly afterwards, I was found to be hypothyroid and since taking medication I've never experienced it again.

Hows your day?

Well just had a new sofa from Marks,Ā  a 3 seater and 2 seater.

We do not have fitted carpets just a brown oak wooden floor.Ā

Master sat looking at the floor and decided that the colour brown oak did not go in with the dark grey sofa's. So we looked for a floor which was grey and we thought easy to fit, after puffing and panting master had to have a rest. Statement from master well when i laid the other floor it only took me a day, been at it all to-day and have laid only about 10-15 planks. What master forgets is it was 10 years agoĀ  since he laid the other floor.

@Melissa, I don't knowĀ  whether it would help in your case, but old farts like me get offered a Shingles Vaccination.Ā  Ages 70-79.Ā  Might at least be worth asking.

Ā

Hope you get sorted soon.

Even before all this bother with arthritic knees, I was suffering from very heavy and tired legs when walking.Ā  I also get numbness in my toes.Ā  'Claudication' occurred to me given my Cardio Vascular issues but:..

Doc checked out the pulses in my feet and they are OK.Ā  She also sent me for an X-Ray to rule out Spinal Stenosis..which I apparently have, but only very mildly and not enough to cause symptoms.

Ā

It was suggested that my heart meds are a possible cause of the numbness, along with age.
