Our grandchildren have all been in these plastic bubbles, but they were on water, not hard ground.  They all said it was hard work and they came out very sweaty!

Paul's birthday present from one of our sons is the 'free fly' thing at Milton Keynes, where you get blown upwards by giant fans and it's supposed to feel as though you are in free fall.  Our son and our grandson have done it before and said it was good.   I'm reserving judgement as Paul is 76 and had a heart bypass over 11 years ago!    Wouldn't get me doing this ever, although I'll be watching.... Paul is very fit, though, and is looking forward to it

An evening of dancing to late 50s and early 60's songs  sounds good, Ben....  but would it be the same as all those years ago, I wonder... I think I'd have to sit a few out these days

Glad everyone has been enjoying the sunshine.  Was up at 5:00 Friday morning and on a train from Wigan to Bristol by 06:30.  Dark at first, then sunny, but increasingly foggy and cloudy as we approached Bristol.  Quite gloomy and chilly in Bristol when we first arrived and  began to think my choice of lightweight jacket and thin sweater might be a mistake... Massive roadworks around Bristol Temple Meads which we had problems with last year, were even bigger this year and the re-routing of pedestrians via lengthy diversions did little for my legs. Also, if you don't have a local's 'feel' for the area, navigation via disrupted and partial signing is a nightmare.  So, we walked a lot further than we should have needed to.

The Hi Fi Show itself was good fun.  I long since gave up the idea that I'll find some amazing bit of kit at a show and I treat it more like 'browsing' than 'shopping'.  As an example, liking a speaker, in an unfamiliar room and running from unfamiliar amps and source components isn't really telling you much about how that speaker might sound with your own kit in your own room.  In any case I'm very happy with my Hi Fi at present, so Bristol this year became more of a general day out and a 'social occasion' for me. Firstly very good to see legendary British speaker manufacturuer Rogers back in production in the UK and their last designer, Andy Whittle, back in the fold.  It was good to catch up with him and he was rather taken aback that I'm still using speakers he personally designed and built for me more than 20 years ago.

Next up I had a good chat with Steve Rowlands from Michell Engineering who make the 'Orbe' turntable I use.  Steve, like so many in the UK specialist audio industry, is a true gent and always very helpful. There's a minor niggle with my turntable which is not the fault of Michell, but more to do with my choice of cartridge.  However, a solution is possible with help from Michell and I'm told will be free of charge.

Rega is a highly successful British manufacturer whose kit I have used in the past.  A very 'ethical' company.  Outside their room I ran into Paul Darwin, one of their senior managers but last seen by me 18 years ago in a pub in Preston after I and another couple of people were made redundant on closure of Audio Excellence.  At that time Paul was a rep for NAIM Audio. We discussed the nefarious activities of a branch manager of a nearby Audio Excellence branch.  He had managed to ingratiate himself with the company owner and was ripping him off royally, whilst making it appear that our branch was at fault. It wasn't discovered until four honest workers were put on the dole. Evidence that unfortunately, not everyone in the business has integrity.  The 'villain' is apparently now working as a car salesman....  That figures...

All in all though, a very pleasant day out.  My friend who has much more money than me bought three 'special pressings' of double vinyl albums.  Limited numbered editions and all that. Cost him £190 with a fiver off the 'Special Show Price.'  ......  I'd hate to pay full price....

Finally got home at midnight and although knackered, not quite ready for bed.  Mrs Col had foolishly left a cold Apple Pie on the kitchen worktop.  Couple of Brandies and a slice of apple pie with cheddar cheese went down nicely.  Slept through from about two a.m. until 13:30 pm today. Take it easy for the rest of the day I reckon...

Glad you enjoyed it Col.   It brought back some good memories of the HI-FI show in Harrowgate in the late 60s.  Did you ever get to one of those?

I don't think me poor old lugs could hear the difference between summat I could pick up at Woolworths (do they even exist any more?) and some good hi-fi kit anymore.

Thanks Dave,

I never got to Harrogate and didn't properly get into hi-fi until the early 1990s.  Always knew it was there, but just couldn't afford anything exotic till the kids were grown etc.

Sadly, Woolworth no longer exists in the UK. I miss their somewhat chaotic merchandising, their 'pick and mix' etc.  Mostly I miss the 'slab cakes' they sold back in the '60s.  Great big things in Fruit Cake, Cherry Cake , Madeira and possibly other varieties.  They would hack off a lump to your requirements.  I never have liked Madeira..  seems like sawdust to me.. but the Cherry was lovely and I rarely turn down a decent bit of fruit cake.  :)

Re the bubbles I thought they were those that you got right inside. Its nice to see young and not so young enjoying themselves in spite of themselves.

Always enjoyed the smell of the Woolworths on Hockley when  i was a pup.  mix of sweets peanuts and Cashew nuts, plus all the other stuff.

In truth, i still hear quite well compared to some my age.  I do find my hearing aids do help in a conversation or picking up the higher notes in music.  I don't think they'd be considerd hi-fi.  I don't wear them all the time though.  Sometimes it's good to leave 'em off.    I'll say no more in case anyone gets hold of my Ipad.

You don't so much climb inside these balls Nonna more put them on,there's a tube that runs all the way through them (open both top and bottom) with shoulder straps fixed inside the tube, the balls rest on your shoulder, very lightweight, your legs stick out the bottom of the balls to allow you to run about, inside the things you are well protected from any knocks and scrapes, like I said great to see grown ups behaving like kids, evryone laughing,Margie,of course you could get inside one and run about with the rest of them,if you see any on the park or similar give it a go, I'm going to the playing field again next Saturday in case they are there again and I'm going to ask for a go, Gizza go mister

I used to moderately into hi-fi, but gradually lost interest in the subject a few years ago.

However in the late 90s a friend who is a serious hi-fi anorak persuaded me to go to a couple of hi-fi shows (just outside Chesterfield) similar to the kind of thing you've been to. They were held in a hotel, where each manufacturer was exhibiting their gear  in a separate room. Prices were always "think of a number, then add two 00s on the end".

(At the time I had a Roksan turntable which was the highest fi I ever reached).

That's how they did the Harrogate one.  Used a hotel with one manufacturer in each room.

Highest Fi I ever reached was a Thorens td150 turntable with a Shure V15 III A couple of Wharfedale speakers and Rogers amp.  I've still got the turntable and speakers.  Still like Vinyl as much as any CD.

When I lived in Oz, I built my own stereo amplifier, started off at 25 watts and I upgraded it to 50 watts per channel, my turntable was, and I still have it, a Realistic DC direct motor drive. It wasn't their top of the line, but the next one down, still expensive.

My speakers were purchased through Dick Smith electronics, kit speakers, sounded pretty good, but back then I had good hearing, I added a home built two channel equalizer, and that stood me in good stead for years.

Mines a Vizio soundbar with sub woofer and a couple of shelf speakers, I can't say it's hi fi though with speakers that small, but does us. I'm thinking of repairing the surround sound and comparing them, but as I've said a couple of times everything has to compete with the whistling in my ears.

I exhibited at a couple of those shows around 1997-9. They were set up by Les Wolstenholme from Chesterfield who ran a company called Avondale Audio based in Chesterfield. Mostly doing modifications to NAIM Audio kit.

Hard work but good fun.

You'r not going to believe this!!!!

Booked to go to Nottingham Playhouse to see Wonderland (play about miners strike, miners v Maggie) one week before brought a new car, parked at Phoenix Park, just getting out of the car and chap in another car backed into us. This sorted out caught tram to Nottm, arrived at Playhouse only to be told the performance was off. Re -booked for the following Tuesday. Plenty of time set off to park at Phoenix park. Next stop Kimberly by-pass traffic at a stand still, all we could see was touch lights moving in the woods (Have we been invaded) no!! just a few horses loose on the by-pass in fact 14 horses. by now time was getting on so phoned playhouse ask if we could re- book as no chance of getting there, so 3rd time lucky. Well so far so good. The play, cast, story and production were brilliant , well worth the wait,

WAS THAT THE END NO!!!!! just going home on  Brinsley   Hill  which is single road / lots of bends /no lights, /the car died on us. Phoned breakdown Green Flag who must admit were excellent but best of all our warranty of this new car only had 4 days to go, SO JUST MADE IT.

Such a lovely day yesterday we took the dogs out for their walk, went the usual way, lots of others had the same idea. Having a problem with Kai, both boys are trained to come back on second whistle, first one stop second one come back. However Kai has suddenly started ignoring whistle when he sees a dog/person and is running to them which makes his brother hesitate and then follow suit. They are both well socialised and everyone is their friend but I am a bit of a loss why he has suddenly started doing this. They are big boys and it must be terrifying for the person they are going to especially if they have children let alone a dog. I kept him on lead after he had done it just let his brother off but they are big lads and need to have a run. Any insight would be welcomed, I am going to find the flexi lead I have so, hopefully I will have more control over him and stop him doing it . Anyway after that we went across motorway bridge to another place we have found which is quieter and has a large meadow where we can let them off so at least he had a good run. I took bottles of water so boys could have a drink, they nearly emptied both bottles. Came back a different way across motorway bridge and finally ended up by Strelley Church where I was relieved to sit on the bench. I always thought there was a female pirate’s grave in the churchyard, can remember it from when I was a child and we used to roam all over, however I had a look and it isn’t, it has a skull and crossbones on which is why I thought she was a pirate but apparently they were put on a lot of old gravestones, pity really much more romantic to think she was a pirate. Finally got back home, we had walked 6 miles, had something to eat then crashed out on settee in front of tv, woke up at about 12 and went to bed. Boys were still crashed out this morning when I got up, legs ache like anything, have a blister under my big toe but think we will be doing it again weather permitting as we all enjoyed it. Boys are racing round garden so they would probably go again today, me - no not today next weekend perhaps.

Another lie in just to complete the catch up.

Beautiful morning here in the Grand Duchy and it may even get warm enough for a trial run of the nice new sun lounger my neighbours bought me for my 70th.  They have me sussed!!  :tanning:

Just a couple of bits of 'snagging' to do in my newly re-furbished loo, then I can get outside.  Might give the grass its second cut of the year..

Next DIY will be to repaint dining room and lounge. after the pipework changes I made before Christmas and the re-plastering it involved.  But then again it's a big job before I go to Cancun.. so I might be forced to leave it till after....

Decisions..decisions..  I can do a decent job of painting, but I can't work as fast as a 'pro'.

Similar thing here.  There's a coffin shaped headstone comemorating George and Kitty Smith in the local churchyard which has a  winged skull surrounded by a snake eating its tail.   Local legend has it that it's the grave of someone killed by an Adder bite up on Billinge Hill..  Trouble is.. with the locals. half of their stories aren't true, and you can't believe the other half...

I'm more inclined to think that the winged skull represents death, but the snake eating its tail represents eternal life.. as explained here:

http://headstonesymbols.co.uk/the-grave-of-george-and-kitty-in-billinge/

To me, the most affecting of all the stones in Billinge churchyard is a full sized one from the early 19thC. I can't remember the name or date, but it commemorates an infant, who seems to be the only occupant of the grave.  The inscription is at the bottom of the stone and the space above, presumably meant for other family members, remains blank.  Of course there could be many other explanations for this and the child's parents may well lie with her and for some reason the stone wasn't further inscribed.. but it still seems an awfully lonely  plot for the little mite.

'Oh What a beautiful morning. Oh what a beautiful day' (One for the NS choir there me thinks). Well the bug that has been going around here in West Mids has finally got me!!!! I have been really mardy for the last few days, can't stand being floppy and sneezy on the sofa for another sunny day so off out in a mo for a few hours.

We used to be members of the National Trust for a few years and after a while we found our visits starting to dwindle as other hobbies took over. We bought a caravan at Sunny Skeggy which took a lot of expense over thirteen years, so the NT had to go. Caravan days gone now, so considering joining the NT again. We lost our long service discount, as discovered when we tried to rejoin a couple of years ago. If I have read the add correctly, it will cost us £114 for the year. Just added the pennies up and if I restrict the Elephants feet and the Caramel Yumm Yumms for a while, I think we can afford it.
