How do you pay for your usage ?  Are you Sim-free, or on some kind of contract ?

I bought a Sim-free Motorola more than 3 years ago. Cost around £150.  My monthly data allowance is much greater than I ever use. I'm gobsmacked at some of the payment figures I see advertised. Some of them are almost more for a month than I pay in a year.

Must admit I bought the Samsung on a 2 year contract.. but for the last 3 years I've been on a SIM only deal.  I pay about £7 per month. Any new phone will just have that SIM inserted.

I too am gobsmacked at the prices some people will pay...  On the other hand, some, especially young.. maybe 'flat dwelling' people, effectively have their entire life routed through..and stored on.. their phone.   For them.. it's a combination of Hi-Fi, TV, Radio, Cinema, PC, Bookshelf..and err phone.. They don't use TVs, Stereo systems, PCs etc.

I'm sort of part way there.  I'm happy to use my phone to listen to books via Audible...and sometimes listen to music on it too..(through headphones obviously.  Even the best phone speakers are dreadful. That said I have a tiny Sansa Clip which I prefer.  I do a bit of web browsing on my phone too.  But mostly, I prefer my PC for browsing, writing, emailing etc... and my Hi Fi system for music. I sometimes use my tablet for viewing TV via the iPlayer etc..

I bought a recon Samsung 6 some years ago and had no problems at all. I changed it on a whim for MotoG 8 with all the bells and whistles, not impressed. Used for calling, texting, alarm reminders mainly with occasional   internet. 2Gb data a month but have never used anywhere near that amount - £5 month.

Dearly beloved has Apple, (phone and IPad) which work fine but they really are not worth the premium, the iPad is about 8yrs old and slowly dying.

I will return to Samsung when the time comes though with my usage that may not be any time soon.

Apple phones are so easy to use. My daughter gave me her old one and I used it for ages until I got an Alexa and couldnt get it to work with the iphone because it needed an update which was already updated. Went for a samsung A20 but I hate it. Granted it has all I need but I find it a bit awkward to use and manage.

Benjamin hope your arm is calming down a bit. Jill beat me to it by saying Lavender essential oil for burns. I always use it and am never without it along with Aloe Vera gel. Both together they work wonders for mozzie bites and stings.

I agree Apple are far too expensive.

Because I use an old Doro, for my sins I have no idea what 2gb or 5gb etc per month means. I know gb is gigabytes, but I don't know what it means in relation to a phone. Maybe it's because I don't use a smartphone, I don't understand the concept. Forgive my ignorance.

Don't misunderstand me Jill. I'm not apologising for not having a smartphone, but for being thick.

You are NOT thick, Beekay.  I don't understand the figures either. I'm not interested in what they mean. If I was interested, I'd go and find out.

Don't debase yourself. The world is full of people who are only too eager to do that for you.

Little Sis has spoken!

Agree with Jill.  It's not necessary to know all the jargon etc.. about Smartphones unless you plan on getting one.

Thnig is.. I never wanted one until I got one.. now I see the attraction.. though I don't let the rule my life.  Mrs Col slagged them off for years until we bought her one.  Now I  think I'd need a crowbar to get it out of her hand..

The big divide is between fans of Apple, and fans of Android phones. Just different Operating Systems.  The short lived Windows phone system appears to be moribund.  I had one from Tesco for about 20 minutes.  Awful thing... took it back.  I don't have any Apple kit and I'm not interested in it.  As Brew says.. not worth the premium.

A smart phone is essentially a miniature computer, with screen, keyboard, 'mouse' etc..built in.  Add on cameras and loudspeakers.. and maybe a few other devices for good measure and you have a Smart Phone. You also get WiFi and Blutooth, which mean you can connect to, and control other 'smart' devices... or you can connect your phone to your own home router for wifi, or use assorted free wifi when out and about. to save on using expensive data carried by your phone signal.

The problem is that many phones are effectively assembled from collections of 'off the shelf' components, produced by companies which specialise in making screens..or cameras. or processors, etc.  Different qualities of all those components are available. Phone makers cobble them tpogether to make phones at different price points. and with different 'talents'.

The trick is to find a phone which will do what you need/want at a price you are willing to pay.  If like some people.. you make your phone the centre of your world and use it for everything including music, video streaming,..gaming etc.. as well as computing, storing  files, pictures, video and other data based stuff.. then it might be worth spending over £1k for a phone.

If you just want a competent phone with half decent camera and storage for a bit of music.. you can get away with paying much, much less.

It takes work though..  For e.g., a friend of mine recommended a Moto G with good basics and a massive battery.. to minimise the hassle of frequent charging.  Thing is after reading around I found that it has actually had a less good screen and some other bits fitted in its latest version.. so it's a worse phone now...  As ever.  Do your research.

Yer pays yer money...

No such problems with the old dolly tub and ponch! Look at the calories our female forebears used up doing the washing every Monday, instead of lounging about outside Greggs, consuming fat laden pasties into an already morbidly obese body. Progress? I don't think so.

CF, Hasselblad were among the best cameras and lenses you could buy. A German maker, I believe.
