Loving our newly installed wood-burning fire.  It’s not yer traditional type, we went for a ‘cassette’ type that sits inside a hole in the wall and it’s just gorgeous to look at and sit beside.

Yes they are Lizzie we have one in the bedroom. ( which used to be the lounge)  Ours has 3 outlets that blow out the heat in other rooms.

Breakfasts , Italy doesn’t really have a great selection of cereals but the better ones are always British. The others I’ve never heard of but I do like porridge Quaker white oats and was surprised to find them. They make fantastic flapjacks too.

I like porridge. I quadruple my ingredients, and divide between 6 Tupperware containers. I add a bit of brown sugar (or golden syrup) a tablespoon of chopped walnuts and tablespoon of raisins. 6 portions are big enough a portion nowadays. Fridge 5 and eat 1 that day. Then zap the others as needed. Only one saucepan to wash this way.

Delightful day today. Nephew visited us with wife and 2 sons. They moved from Australia to a small village just outside of Rome a year or so ago They started a takeaway business and are doing very well. The secret of their success is that he (trained and experienced chef) makes PIES. Pies are an added attraction to the usual pasta based dishes and the clientele love em. Pies don't seem to have been discovered in Italy? One of the youngsters (5) checked out the chicken coupe and was so excited to discover an egg in the nest box. His younger brother chose an egg from the rack in the pantry and they are looking forward the having THEIR dippy egg for breakfast tomorrow. So heart warming.

Life is good.

I used to have my cornflakes with hot milk when I was at school.

I have Shreddies with cold semi skimmed milk but like to let them soften for a few minutes before eating.

Today I went for Covid Jab No. 6. It went OK.

I then went into St Helens and scoured the charity shops, looking for a Tux, for the 'Gala Nights' on my upcoming cruise. I'm not spending on a new suit, or a Tux, because I doubt it will ever get used again.. Miraculously, in the last shop I found one. Jacket and waist coat. One button missing, but Mrs Col will sort that. £5.

Good to go....:)

A chap I knew in the packaging industry had the contract to supply Shredded Wheat with the cardboard for their boxes. He did very well!

Given the amount of salt and sugar in current day cereals you might be better off eating the cardboard packaging.

My day started badly. I took one of my dogs to be washed and trimmed early this morning. I got her out of the car and crossed the road. It’s my nieces shop and she saw me coming and opened the door. Her dog Nana was sprawled out in front of the desk. Lily my dog stopped and as she turned round she slipped her harness and ran across the road into a busy car park. Both my nieces and another assistant ran out and someone pointed up the road and there she was on the pavement not knowing where to go. I called her and as usual came to me straightaway. What a relief. In the few seconds before I crossed the road I had to wait ages before the traffic stopped so it was double relief. She is only familiar with the roads around here where there’s no traffic so I’m future I carry her in.

I once saw a dog run out of the vet's surgery. Tiny little thing it was and going like a bat out of hell. How it managed to get out, I don't know. It was in the consulting room and the door should have been closed. There were two doors to negotiate to get into reception and they were always kept shut.

I watched as three veterinary nurses pursued the dog down the road but, to mix metaphors, they didn't stand a cat in hell's chance of catching it!

This one. She’s obedient and returned to me immediately. The problem was that she doesn’t like people who are in front or behind her, she waits for them to pass. But as I entered the shop my nieces dog was there and I think it must have startled Lily but she knows her has has never been afraid of her. Now looking for secure leads anti furto ones.

Went for my appointment at Heart Failure Clinic this morning. Nurse Trish told me my bloods etc., were all good, so things are OK for now.

Then went off to Matalan and scored a pair of 'inexpensive' Tux trousers to go with my s/h Tux jacket and waistcoat. It's not that I can't afford a new Tux or similar..I just see it as both wasted cash and wasted resources, very unlikely  to be used again. And anyway, my 5 quid 'button missing' Tux had the 'missing' button in a pocket, along with a white Bow Tie. So, that's the 'Gala Nights' sorted...:)...30 quid outfit... that'll have the other punters jealous....

No such thing as a Heart failure clinic hereabouts DJ. In the two years since having stents fitted I've only seen a doctor once except when I was taken in as an emergency a year ago. Good to report that I am so much better that I've been for over 2 years.

During the Concept2 January Virtual Team Challenge I rowed 701 km to get 68th place from an entry of 10,151 and I feel really good. 3 of my crew mates also got in the first 100. They are aged 79, 80 and 81 - I'm 84 and we are known as the ANCIENTS. I've been in the ANCIENTS cyber crew since 2008 and we enthuse each other and share ways of maintaining fitness. It's still a thrill to remain an athlete, albeit an aging athlete

It was a shock and complete surprise when I had a heart attack 2 years ago. I was really fit until becoming ill 4 weeks prior to being taken to hospital. In retrospect I think it may have been triggered by covid.

Now off to do a few hours fishing, followed by a meeting with the Coffin Dodgers Club.

Good on yer PP., more power to yer elbow. Keep that up and you'll be able to row across the channel and fetch a few visitors

I had my heart attack in August 2020 and they put some more stents in. The surgeon was the same bloke who did the same op 16 years prior (2004). Take care mate and I wish you all the best.  B.

More power to you PP and well done.

Thing is, as I have  to explain a lot.. the original heart attack I had 25 + years ago came without warning and it was many hours before it was properly diagnosed. Routine angiograms weren't done back then and no mention of stents. The result was a lot of muscle death in my Right Ventricle and a completely  blocked artery, not seen until years later, which is the same 25 years on. I've given up trying to explain the difference to my neighbour, who had a bit of angina, got examined ( on my recommendation) and was found to have a narrowed artery, which was stented, so he has no heart damage, but thinks he's seriously ill.

The heart failure I have is in the Left Ventricle and I'm told it's an inevitable 'knock on' from the original attack. It's progressive. I've gone from a 53% EF in 2019 to a 35% EF now. I am told to exercise a lot, but not too much. Finding the balance isn't  easy.  At present I do weights every other day, swim once a week, walk most days, etc.

I can't comment on HF clinics elsewhere, but my impression is that they are pretty much everywhere. Once the Consultant decides you have HF, he can refer you to specialist nurses who can monitor you and 'manage' your condition.on a regular basis, referring you back to the Consultant if necessary.

There are a number of HF clinics in Notts, Including Ashfield, Bassetlaw and Rushcliffe.

Beekay - I did row across the channel when I was a young 74. It all started when talking to the chairman of our village football team and I commented on how unfit they all were. It ended up with me challenging them to field a team of 6 to row across the Channel indoors alongside me in the village hall. It was really a charity thing but they took the challenge seriously. While I was chugging along at a steady 2.05/500 they were changing every 10 minutes. They began to fall behind until they 'twigged' and started to change every 5 min. They eventually overhauled me and finished up in Calais 5 min ahead :) I had the last laugh though when in the pub after - they were totally knackered and I was smugly drinking free beer. We made about £300 for a local charity.

A few years ago a couple of chaps from the next village took an inflatable with an outboard from Dover to Calais. They didn’t bother with charts, they just followed the Cross Channel ferry. They moored in Calais, had a meal and stopped overnight. They didn’t bother with passports or customs and nobody questioned them. It’s a bit like today really except they didn’t seek asylum!

I second that PP. When we first came to live here in 1971  I made a steak and kidney pie ( without kidneys). !! My in-laws were mad about it. Every thing I make into a pie is devoured. Pastry is simple but everyone asks me how I make it and how many eggs are in it. No no no, a kilo of flour 500g of margarine and lard mixed salt and cold water don’t over mix. No matter what I say it never turns out for them . They obviously haven’t got the touch of the British!

No Jill.  The boys were in the house.  You do have to watch out for them, they have a habit of parking near your feet.

Learned a valuable lesson BK.  It all happened so quick.  I'm amazed I didn't break my glasses.
