How's your day?

If I made you laugh MrsB., then my work here is done !

My role in life is to entertain and assist. If I cannot do this, then I've failed. My reward is your thanks and praise.

Keep supping the syrup and make sure you stock up on Bog rolls.

Your servant ma'am.

DJ360. Things here are a bit more forward.

I'm behind my veggie schedule this year. Firstly, I wanted to get my patio completed before my next knee op, but also the weather here has been cool, despite the strong sunshine many parts have seen for the last week or so.

My tomato plants are only about 6" high and in the middle of 'hardening off', but I'm potting them up to 5" pots today and they'll go into final pots in a week or so.  Cucumber get similar treatment. I don't have a greenhouse.

For the last couple of years I've given away bucket loads of the 'Bella' Cherry tomatoes. They are very nice, but surplus doesn't really amount to much if 'processed'.  This year I'm trying .'Crimson Cherry', which according to the sales blurb are a bit more substantial.

I'm still growing 'Crimson Crush' too. They are superb.  Large Toms with great flavour and very few seeds. Also grow well outdoors and are blight resistant.

Mrs B sorry I didn’t answer about my husband. He’s ok the hospital gave him a cortisone injection and strapped his knee up. It’s still bothering him a bit but at least it’s not as painful as it was. They recommended a risonanza so Dr tomorrow to ask for prescription to book one. Now it’s my turn I have a floater in my right eye. My optician has given me a phone number as she can’t look properly. Age I suppose. I hate going to the drs I’ve had too many visits in the past.

We’re lucky in having two 8 by 12 aluminium greenhouses. Neither cost us a penny. One was given to my wife by my parents over 40 years ago as a birthday present and the other was inherited from her mother. We’ve got peppers, aubergines, cucumbers and tomatoes, some of those are three feet high already. I have had to move them, dismantle and re-erect both of them from other houses though. I’ve just had a nasty accident with a detached hosepipe. I didn’t carry out a safety assessment on that before use!

Hope you are ok Phil. Remember we are all at a certain age, me included and we don’t always do what we are supposed to do.

Just come back from Asti in a sudden storm, side of roads flooded,

arrived on the road to home and everything was dry. Now it’s started here the biggest drops of rain !

The hose detached and drenched me. No harm done. I carried on working in the warm sun until my trousers were dry!

A proper H&S Assessment of Hosework, would have indicated shorts, or less, to reduce drying times and minimise risk of pneumonia in the case of drenching.

In other news.. Yesterday I had an appointment at a health centre in St Helens which has extensive parking to the rear.

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.4549641,-2.7239518,63m[/IMG]

I parked in one of the four 'disabled' specs next to 'Atlas Pharmacy', because they were all free, and I have a blue badge. It's really a case of 'swings and roundabouts' regarding distance from the disabled and 'normal' spaces to the entrance, but there were more 'disabled' than 'normal' specs free, so I reasoned I'd leave an extra space for those without blue badges.

When I emerged, I was able to back out of my space and approach the 'access' road, to make my way out. A lady was also following behind me from one of the 'normal' spaces. However, I couldn't get out of the side bay because some moron had abandoned a huge old Jag in the access road next to the silver and black cars seen in the pic. Unneccessary because there were a nuber of free spaces, both 'normal' and 'disabled'.  Meanwhile a frail old chap was trying to reverse his little car. a Micra or somesuch, from the row of spaces at 90 degrees, against the wall opposite the Jag. Several of us gathered to help the old chap manouvre. He was very flustered by this point.

Very annoyed, I marched back into the centre's waiting room and enquired as to whether anyone would own up to 'abandoning' the Jag. Several people told me that it would be the bloke who'd been going out as I went in. They all seemed to be aware of him. As I re-emerged, the bloke was by his car and being told he was not in a parking space and was causing an obstruction.

"I know", he replied, without apology, "I'm going in a minute.."... then proceeded to start rummaging in his boot.

Another person said: "We're all waiting.." and the offender responded. "That's twice I've been told now". "Let's make it three", I said. Things continued until he was counting at every word.. '"Five times..Six times" etc.. and still making no attempt to move. At this point I shouted. "Stop counting and just move the bloody thing!", whereupon he looked up and finally appeared to grasp the chaos he was causing.  His reaction was to shout: "WHY DON'T YOU ALL F*** OFF!!! .. To which I instinctively responded.. "WE CAN'T F*** OFF BECAUSE YOU WON'T F*** OFF!!!

At this point he finally got into his car and drove towards me, clearly expecting me and the lady behind me to reverse back into our vacated spaces to allow him to do a three point turn. I didn't move, which forced him to reverse all of ten yards towards the exit to turn around and then drive to the exit. All the way waving two fingers out of his Driver's window and shouting "F*** OFF!!!" repeatedly at the top of his voice. When he reached the exit, he sat stationary for a full minute, blocking entry for someone waiting to drive in, as well as exit for me.

What a charmer!

We're expecting 23° here later this week, Oz. Not bad for summer!  Not warm enough for grapes, though, so we need the Aussies to keep making their delicious red wine.

Yes Jill, for me it is a big bold Shiraz of which we have many, not 30 minutes drive from home.

I'm probably a bit of a Philistine, but I'm happy enough with the ubiquitous 'Yellow Tail' stuff..mostly the Merlot. It's drinkable and relatively inexpensive. When a former neighbour returned to our street for a visit after about 10 years in 'Oz', he sniffed warily at a proffered glass of red, which  just happened to be Yellow Tail.. and disdainfully declared it 'a mix', by which I assumed he meant a blended wine.

I hate health centre car parks. Alfreton has a huge health centre. Until a couple of years ago, I used to take a friend to appointments there. She could barely walk, so no option but to park in their parking area and she did have a blue badge. The antics of those who arrived after me had to be seen to be believed. They'd park anywhere. Maybe they'd all had frontal lobotomies. Then there was the added frustration of the automatic barrier which lifted automatically as you went in but required a code when leaving. Result, logjam because people didn't know/couldn't remember the code/ couldn't work out how to operate the keypad.  My friend has now passed on to happier locations and I don't need to go there any more.

My surgery is a poky little place with no parking spaces but that doesn't bother me. They do, at least, do their own blood tests, unlike the massive health centre I mentioned earlier which was built with a specialist phlebotomy suite that is no longer used as they send all their blood test patients to hospitals via Swiftqueue! Makes no sense to me.

I’ve just been to get a Sheen flame gun for weed removal. They’ve been made in Bulwell since 1952. It looks a formidable bit of kit. I’ve just assembled it and I’ll  get some paraffin to fuel it up in the morning. I’m going to have some fun with this, it looks dangerous!

We’ve used a gas weed burner for a while now for between slabs and on the drive, saves using that awful glyphosate, especially with the amount of cats around us. We like it, just don’t get it too near the UPVC doors! Our garden is really small though so it’s ideal.

I bought one of these a few years back and Mrs Mess just loves to play with it.

Last year she managed to ignite a largish conifer which was next to the fence.

Anyone remember the Fawlty Towers episode where Manuel comes out of the burning kitchen shouting “fire” followed by Basil joining in?
Well after I heard my wife’s Manuel impression I took over as Basil. Fortunately the hosepipe was connected and close by so it was quickly put out.

The lesson here is that conifers, even green ones are very inflammable which might surprise a few unsuspecting weed burners.
