Commo 1,292
Most probably a generational thing Brew, but having just played the above clip, I have absolutely no idea what on earth it was!!

FLY2 10,108
Does anyone know just how many students there are at the two universities nowadays, as a taxi driver told me the other night that there were over 100, 000. That sounds a bit steep to me, but I wouldn't be surprised.
Cliff Ton 10,435
According to Wiki (which may not be gospel) Trent University has nearly 30,000 students, and the proper University has around 33,000. In my book that doesn't add up to more than 100,000. But I'd trust Wikipedia more than I'd trust a taxi driver.
FLY2 10,108
Thanks Cliff, they were about the numbers I thought. Thanks.
LizzieM 9,497
Crikey, I thought there were only about 40,000, which is plenty. Oh well, a friend of ours is building student accommodation in Nottingham now. He’s sorted students out in Leeds and needed another challenge! It’s all very well but their term is only 30 weeks long, the city’s nightspots can’t survive for the other 22 weeks in the year.
FLY2 10,108
I assume that they do Lizzie, as I suppose a good few are local. Plenty of scope for future development then. I hope he makes a tidy sum !
LizzieM 9,497
He reckons, and I agree with him, that by building student accommodation it frees up houses, such as in Lenton, for families. That can’t be a bad thing. Too many people have too many complaints about the number of students in our city but in my opinion they are good for the economy, but at the same time I wouldn’t want a house full of students next door to me.
FLY2 10,108
Precisely, they're spending must add millions to our local coffers. Agree re Lenton too. Keep the students on campus and under supervision.
catfan 14,793
No wonder students put £millions into the local coffers (pubs & clubs) even more would go into the local coffers if they paid council tax.
radfordred 6,284
A few Corbyn lovers on here, go meet his brother Piers in Nottingham on the stand up to freedom rally, bring drums, horns & whistles .............. Crikey
Jill Sparrow 10,269
"If you don't know your rights, you don't have any?" If you don't know the chemical formula for oxygen, you won't be able to breathe? When I was a student, many moons ago, I was more concerned about getting my assignments in on time. Maybe that's because I also worked full time!
philmayfield 6,089
An eclectic mix of speakers!
Cliff Ton 10,435
One of the speakers listed is Piers Corbyn, who is considerably madder than his better known brother.
philmayfield 6,089
It’ll attract a bunch of rabble. Not a bowler hat or collar and tie will be in site! Certainly no masks so we’ll see their faces beneath their reversed baseball caps.
Brew 5,379
I googled the names on the poster - what a bunch of loony tunes. If it wasn't so sad it would be funny.
philmayfield 6,089
I wish I could be there but I only have a baseball cap with the peak at the front.
Jill Sparrow 10,269
You surprise me, Phil. I'd have thought a chap like you would have the complete set: peak at the front, peak at the back and one with a peak at each side. I'd also expect you to have the sartorial decorum not to wear any of them!
philmayfield 6,089
I have to confess I have 2 baseball caps. A Musto one which I wear when I’m on the high seas and a rather tasteful one in tweed which I wear during rustic pursuits.

philmayfield 6,089
I’ve just seen a video of a bunch of protestors marching from the Forest to presumably the Market Square. It’s strange that they are using umbrellas to protect them from the rain but not masks and distancing to protect them from the virus. Double standards I think.
radfordred 6,284
Earlier today, not sure I’d want Jeremy for a brother? Nowt saying he’d want me.
