carni 10,094
Brilliant Michael, Thank you for sharing. We will have to do a tour when the weather gets better. It's so good to see such fabulous architecture. My favourite is The Prudential Assurance Building, but they are all great. How ever can they be replaced by todays so called architecture. Thankfully some have survived. Hopefully for many years to come. I wonder?
NewBasfordlad 3,599
Good find Michael thank you. When you look at the interior of Papplewick it is hard to imagine it as a place of industrial work. Yet when in steam the whole atmosphere changes, two beam engines hiss hot steam and large boilers throw out immense heat.
plantfit 7,535
The Victorians took a lot of pride in the work and whatever they made it was made to last, the mortar joints in the brickwork are so precise, the different shapes in the bricks all made with pride, and the pumping stations were built with amazing cast iron pillars all painted once again with pride, funny thing is though non of these pumping stations were meant for public viewing, here is a picture of the Abbey pumping station in Leicester very similar to Papplwicks These Victorian buildings whether stone, brick or cast iron will be around long after the concrete buildings have been demoilished crushed down to secondary aggregates and reused to build more forgetable follies Rog 2
NewBasfordlad 3,599
^^^^^^^^That's the amazing thing Rog as you point out very ornate and the only people to see it would be the workforce and management and if you look at Redhill station the workforce on site housing is just as well built.
woody 549
Can't help thinking that we have lost the plot as far as architecture is concerned. Despite modern technology the Victorians can leave us standing.
