I read that NCT are buying more buses which are to run on “bio gas”. This is obviously a good thing as the emissions are less polluting than diesel. However there is a slight flaw in their environmental credentials. They are saying that the buses run on “bio gas” when in actual fact they are fuelled from the same mains gas supply that everyone else uses. Bio gas, from the producers, is pumped into the mains gas supply and forms a small part of the total useage. They appear to claim they are running wholly on “bio gas” which is misleading.

And don't forget, in a few years time, all this bio gas stuff will be not very good for you!. The same as diesel was the way to go, years a go, and now that the " powers that be" have had they're revenue, its not good to use diesel. Some folk's just can't see it !

It’s a bit cheaper than derv but the new buses are more expensive due the specialist engines. The bio gas is predominately methane and similar to the North Sea stuff. It’s made from rotting vegetable matter. The gas is not delivered by tanker to NCT as it’s pumped into the gas grid but I understand the council pays the biogas producer. I just think it’s misleading to say that the buses are running on biogas when that’s just a minute part of the mixture.

Going off on a slight tangent, I saw 1 of the medi link electric buses on the back of a recovery truck yesterday.

It was travelling along the ring road heading north.

The buses are not that old, and don't cover many miles, as they only run 5 days a week.

And gas powered engines don't last as long as derv or petrol, run too hot they say.

Diesel engines and the injector pump need the oily nature of the diesel fuel for lubrication. Gas doesn't have the oily content so there is an increase in wear. Biogas engines probably don't have an injector pump as the engine will be fed by gas pressure alone. Biogas engines might even be derived from petrol engines rather than diesel.  I shall have to find out now I have suggested it.

Apparently valve heads burn out much quicker due to excessive heat.

Can we get the council to buy lot's more, that should justify a decent poll tax increase for them to waste money on.

Well the WPL helped to fund the white elephant, I mean tram !   I have an idea where the money for these new buses is coming from, yes you've guessed, the much maligned city motorist it seems.

Plans could be underfoot to introduce s POLLUTION CHARGE for the city !  City centre shopping will die, a good job we have online shopping instead !

That's until the dust has settled then wait & see. I wouldn't trust this council as far as I could throw em.

Will James Mellors have to pay when all his fair ground wagons are in the square ? No doubt special dispensation will be made for him.

  • 1 year later...

Read somewhere that flywheel powered buses where very efficient & the answer: You'd run up a flywheel at the terminus, the flywheel would then generate the electricity to power the wheels for the buses journey. If you got stuck in traffic & the flywheel ran down then you'd - er - uhm - well - wait for a special truck with a flywheel winder-up-gubbins-thingy powered by petrol or diesel..... Ahh-ah, I know, you could have a petrol or diesel engine in the bus to power the flywheel then if it runs down there's no problem. There I've sorted the problem out for the council...
