A great reminder of shops in times gone Pounders, McCarthys and Chambers the butchers, I can recall going in there with my mother for meat also an older sister and B in L worked there. Bulwell was the main place to shop other than the co-op for people on Bestwood Estate. Bulwell had a great variety of shops and a market and was walking distance from Bestwood.

There were two butcher's shops named Chambers in Bulwell. I believe the proprietors were related. I was at school with Denise Chambers whose parents kept the shop in Coventry Lane/Road. The other shop was near the market place.

Strelley House Commercial Road.

Originally built as a free school in 1667, again lots of local history in & around Bulwell.

During my stay in the QMC last year one of my physio's was a young Bulwell bloke whose grand parents just happen to live in this house today. No amount of hinting could get me an invite to go & take a peek in there !         http://www.ournottinghamshire.org.uk/page/strelley_house_bulwell

That was the Henry Mellish adopted church. We used to troop down there for an annual service. I was in the choir. I was press ganged into that. The music master asked me if I could read music. ‘Not really’ I said. ‘Can you tell when the notes go up and down?’ ‘Oh yes’. Right well you’re in the choir! Some also rang the bells there if they were in the campanological society. The last time I went was in the 60’s for the commemoration service of the old headmaster, Geoff Houston. The incumbent at the time was Canon Sprittles.

Old pubs.

The original Golden Ball with the Royal Oak next door. the Oak is still there, not a place I would recommend  !  The Midland Bank is now Costa Coffee & one for Benjamin at the end.

I spent too much time in Red Lion ,then down to what is now Lion revived, I don't remember the previous name, sold Taddys brown ale then in the back room of Billy with Ted as the landlord. Cross the road to Oak and end up in Monkey or Scotts Greys. Just recalled another shop on Main street junction with Highbury Vale Roses the shoe shop, amazing what memories a few old photos bring back.

There was also a chemist, quite an old fashioned shop, on the same side as The Royal Oak. I remember going there with my friend Denise Chambers to buy saltpetre which her parents used in their butcher's shop.

The old "Acropolis" is at present being renovated from a god awful chippy & pizza takeaway to something called "Zinger Munch" whatever that establishment might be.

In it's day the Acropolis was the best kebab house in Bulwell, I bought my first ever donor kebab there back in the '70s. After a few beers in the 360 club we went in there & was intrigued to know what a kebab was.

It was at the time I thought beautiful, never quite understood what the actual ingredients were !

Just checked & is a fast food chicken & pizza with halal, in that case I will steer clear !
