pemberton 15
Just read in the Nottingham Evening Post that one of my wrestling heros has just died of cancer, Jackie Pallo, the guy with the pony tail haircut. He used to be saturday afternoon wrestling on regular basis fighting such people as Mick McManus, Bert Royale, etc. I remember I always tried to get home for 4 o'clock on a saturday afternoon to listen tot he late Kent Walton say 'hello grapling fans and welcome to the festival inn trowell'! radfordred 6,284
Love Jackie's banter with the crowd. As a kid in the 70s Kendo Nagasaki for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Rjo_m9UESU

Actors? Wrestling not real??? Tell me its not true! RIP anyway Mick
katyjay 5,090
My mum used to watch wrestling on Saturday afternoons, used to yell at the screen at the antics the wrestlers got up to, especially the 2 mentioned in this thread.
mudgie49 401
I remember my mum taking my brother and I to see the wrestling at the Victoria baths, top of the bill, were Mick McManus and Billy Two rivers. At one point, I thought my mum was going to jump in the ring and sort out Mr' McManus.
Ayupmeducks 1,730
I was told Billy Two Rivers stopped coming to Nottingham, as he'd been caught giving another Nottm wrestlers wife a good time in bed....Don't know how true it was...
carni 10,094
I always liked to see Billy Two rivers do his War Dance, especially if someone got him angry,or was it all an act,, doesn't matter really it was all part of the show. Was it Big Daddy or one of the others called Shirley Crabtree or something similar. katyjay 5,090
I remember Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks.
Beefsteak 305
Big Daddy was Shirley Crabtree (or vice versa) Luke McMasters was Giant Haystacks. They came along 'later' in my own wrestling experience. My earliest recollections are of "The Royals" (Vic Faulkner and Bert Royal), Mick McManus, Steve Logan, Brian "Goldbelt" Maxine, Les Kellet, Jackie Pallo and 'Bad' Bobby Barnes. Michael Booth 7,364
I used to watch the wrestling in the 60's with my girlfriend and family. Like other people have mentioned on this thread, we'd scream and shout at the antics (when the Ref wasn't looking, of course) of Mick McManus, Steve Logan and the other 'baddies'...lol. In those days people would just watch the programme for what it was, entertainment, enjoyment, fun and lots of laughter. Wrestling had a massive TV audience and everyone seemed to have a favourite wrestler. I can remember taking my girlfriend (later to be my wife) to the Victoria Baths to see a show and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The noise used to be loud at home but it was deafening at the Victoria Baths, what with the ladies trying to hit the baddies with their handbags. Good days, good memories. Bing 78
Johnny 'Black' Kwango, Masumbula who came in with a leopard skin over his shoulders, the comedian Les Kellet, Oddjob with his bowler hat. All these and many more as mentioned above at the Victoria Baths 50 years ago.
denshaw 2,871
Les Kellet was born in 1915 Mick Mcmanus 1920 Does that make you feel old?
Beefsteak 305
What it means to me is that Mick McManus was still throwing himself around the ring at the age of 50 odd !
Cliff Ton 10,457
There was a programme on BBC4 last Sunday (it was a repeat) about the 'golden' days of wrestling, which included many of the well-known names mentioned here. And fortunately, it's on iPlayer http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01p96ly/Timeshift_Series_12_When_Wrestling_was_Golden_Grapples_Grunts_and_Grannies/ It includes some fascinating - and slightly weird - stuff about Kendo Nagasaki (Peter Thornley to his friends)
FLY2 10,108
Alan Dennison and Count Bartelli were two more that did the rounds. Kendo Nagasaki was my all time favourite though. Tibor Szackas , the Hungarian, he was brilliant too. I saw several of these characters when they hosted wrestling bouts on the seafront at Skegness. Must have been in the early 60's. My God, how time flies.
DJ360 6,721
We sometimes used to nip down the M1 to Trowell services because it was the only place open late at night back in the 60's. Stood in the queue and heard a voiice behind saying. 'Eyyagorrenny Lamb Cutlets luv.'. Turned around to look and it was Jackie Pallo. I was too intimidated to talk to him. He probably wasn't interested in talking to me anyway!. Great entertainer. Col
FLY2 10,108
Trowell Services was most convenient when you could nip down the little access road and not use the M way .
Cliff Ton 10,457
If you watched the Saturday afternoon wrestling, you'll remember the commentary was done by Kent Walton. And Kent Walton's main job was writing the script for soft-porn films which you could see at places the Classic or Moulin Rouge.
poohbear 1,360
Script??....Plumber fixes sink...housewife gets her kit off and jumps on him! That's not a script....thats fantasy. We all know it is 'cos the milkman was already banging away there at 7am.
Guest
Went to the wrestling often..Bad Boy Bobby Barnes was my fave.
Chulla 4,946
#23. I don't follow you, poohbear, why was a milkman banging away doing a plumbers job? Surely, she wouldn't have needed a plumber?
