Mention of Van Der Graff Generator reminds me of staggering out of the Bell one boozy Saturday lunchtime, when my mate Bob Hayes asked if I fancied going to see them play that evening.

”Where?” I asked, thinking somewhere local like the Boat or Uni, or De Montfort Hall.

”Hammersmith Odeon. The gig starts in three hours.”

Cue a mad dash to the station, another mad dash across London, just making it there in time. Then another rush to catch the last train home. Missed the last bus, so had to walk the three miles home.

It was worth the effort, though.

Tony Iommi (Frank) - my all time guitar hero - so much so that I bought one of his signature Eggle S.G.'s , 21 years ago - left handed of course with cross inlays - still got it !!

Gillan's version is still the best IMHO. What a voice ! A utube regular here.

Epic pieces like this, have stayed in my life since i first discovered them.

Suppers Ready or PFM would soothe my ravaged brow at exam revision time.

I dated the Ceramic Teachers Daughter...which at first didn't go down well!

My LP collection brought him 'round.

The album and it's sleeve is impeccable- no one else seems to get that sound from a strat guitar.

Many memories...but not postable.

"Overhead the albatross"....

One of the rare occasions when a piece of music transcends the pop charts ..and appeals to all.Very clever..the way they multi layered the vocals to provide an orchestra of song. Cut in Stockport..this group had a great pedigree already..Graham Gouldman had penned many hits ..and for The Hollies and Hermans Hermits etc...

Takes me back to 1975 and snogging.

Prog Pop i'm calling it...enjoy.
