I think the confusion with the Kardomah is it moved. This topic has been discussed recently on Facebook. The Kardomah or places trading under that name have been located in several parts of the city centre. A group of us used to meet on Saturday mornings in the early 1970’s in the KD and at that time it was towards the bottom of King Street, on a corner with an alley way. But Kardomah’s have also been on Parliament Street, just around the corner from King Street and also somewhere else was suggested but I don’t recall where exactly.

In the mid to late Seventies I recall a shop, roughly next to the Lion Hotel, doors were always wide open, so the chap on the mic could be heard,

Never went in personally but did find it interesting!

I think these were know as mock auctions. Used to pop up here and there. We bought a set of saucepans on holiday in Scarborough when we’d not been married long from one of these places. They were quite cheap and we had them years. Good buy.

Where would the Kardomah Cafe be today ?

Was on Corner of Lincoln street, now rebuilt as Sports direct, opposite what's now Mcdonalds.

I'm sure it had previously been rebuilt to all glass sided to Lincoln St.

I remember the Kardomah on King Street. The other side of the alleyway was Jeannettes, one of my favourite shops which was there for years.

The actual coffee shop was below ground, down a flight of stairs. I recall my mother, who was a bit of a connoisseur of coffees, talking about a previous incarnation of the Kardomah but can't recall where it was. I remember the King Street version opening in the 70s and mum comparing it very unfavourably with her all time favourite, The Oriental Cafe.

I remember a two floor Kardomah at the top of Market Street (they roasted and ground coffee near the door so the aroma would attract custom) and a smaller version on Clumber Street -that one may have been opposite the Lion Hotel.

I don't recall place with a reverse auction on Clumber Street but there was County Sales on Thurland Street (mentioned elsewhere on these pages) which did something similar.

I’d forgotten it was downstairs. Now you’ve reminded me I seem to recall a wide spiral staircase.

It was downstairs, letsavagoo,  but I don't recall it being a spiral staircase.the stairs were directly opposite the door. Didn't like the chairs. Black, powder coated, steel framed efforts with dark beige, plastic upholstered, foam rubber cushioning. Very uncomfortable to sit on.

At street level, I think they sold coffees, specialist teas, etc.

Around 1966/7, there was a shop called Cavalcade on the site where the Kardomah stood on the corner of  Cliumber/Lincoln Streets. Not the same building, unfortunately. The new structure was typical 60s rubbish.  Cavalcade was a shop along the lines of Habitat. I recall going in there with my sister around the time it opened. She bought a bright red enamel coffee pot!

I don't think Cavalcade lasted long. I remember the same building years later as a shoe shop of which there were  many along Cliumber Street.

I think, in this case, she is.  If I remember correctly, they looked like modern, replacement stairs. A short flight, opposite the entrance door, left turn onto a half landing, then a short flight down to the coffee shop. Counter on your right as you reached the bottom.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Clumber street is the busiest pedestrianised street in the world. Anybody know if this is true or just an urban legend?

The Council used to go on about Clumber Street and Bridlesmith Gate being the busy link between the two shopping centres. And back in the 70s and 80s it was true.

Bridlesmith Gate is now an extreme ghost town; almost everything has closed down because no-one goes there, because it leads to a dead-end (Broad Marsh Centre).

All I'm hearing about Broad Marsh seems to toll the death knell for that area. Nobody seems to have a good word for it. Cannot remember when I last went in there. It has to be when we lived in Nottingham and going in there to pick up something from Argos, that used to be inside, opposite the entrance. Even then it didn't  make an impression on me.

I wouldn't be surprised if that is true [that Clumber Street is the busiest pedestrianised street]. I remember its being incredibly busy, the main route, and small, between the market square and the other side of town.

I know what you mean. It's always a battle to be able to read anything there before you're swamped by adverts appearing from all sides.

Would Lincoln St be the one that had Jonathan James on the other corner?

When I looked at the original pic, I was thinking back entrance to Littlewoods..

Don't currently have access to maps, Google etc..

Unrelated. i recall seeing a picture

that show's Bradley's/Virgin being a music shop in about 1900, possibly could have been music related, for close on 100 years!

Looked on Google the entrance/alley to the right, was blocked, but the outline can still be seen today (well..4 years ago)

Again unrelated but when walking from Clumber St to the back entrance of Littlewoods, on the left before entering, there was a large expanse that resembled a wasteground, remained like that for year's to my knowledge, what's there now?

Hindleys was there for a long time before being Bradleys etc. See pics No.11 & 19 in the NEP link further back.

Still an empty space. Used as a private car park for nearby buildings.

Does anybody else only see the first 3 pictures when using the link on this site?

Did a general Google for the page, worked fine.. strange.

Yes that's the picture, Hindleys, must be close on 100 years? What year did Virgin close?

Letting my brain race here..nothing new

Did that Virgin Shop have turnstiles at the doorway entrance? Recall an upstairs that had arcade games...
