Old Streets of Nottingham

Recommended Posts

There is a video of the opening..and many smashing photos on FB..shame i don't live in Nottm. That would be a lovely organisation to do some volunteer work with. The work done is a credit.

Interesting pic Ian. Universal Engineering. I sold tool steel to them in the 60's. Did they become Castle Engineering or was that along the road? That DS Safari was an awsome vehicle. My mate had one and it seemed very futuristic. It boiled over one day when we were in the Highlands. Opened the bonnet and could not believe the number of pipes and hoses - a right snake pit.

It's been said that the man who designed the DS's had a wife who was bonking a mechanic !

I recognised this instantly..Peachey Street...1917 here.60447-1-280-99999-unpad.jpgFemale window cleaners helping the war effort. For those not familiar this is the bottom end of Mansfield Rd.

Behind the two women is Mansfield Rd..which today would be House Of Fraser.

Looking at Peachey Street here in the 1940's from across Mansfield Road.53638-1-280-99999-unpad.jpgYou will notice the Regent Hall Cinema has painted the brickwork on the arches..this was done in the 30's to attempt to revitalise and attract new custom.

Very late 50's.and empty.60551-1-280-99999-unpad.jpg.Taken from the corner of Peachey Street and the Peacock Pub..the Regent Hall served as a place of worship in it's day too.During WW2 it was declared unsafe..timber sprung flooring was deemed dangerous if bombed..and it was closed regents.jpg.

55302-1-280-99999-unpad.jpgAll change in the 1960's for Peachey Street..the Regent has gone and replaced by The Nottm Design Centre. We became friends with the writer Slavomir Rawicz..Ruth Notleys Shop is to the right as is Len Barnes and Dalys Sweetshop.

Those railings on the left..where the parked car should'nt be ..as it's the 31 Bus Stop- i sat perched on them day after day witnessing the awful demolition of Victoria Station..George the Greek from the Olympic Cafe would often join me ..bringing me a frothy coffee in a glass cup..Streets eh?

That's the very phone box that I was on about in another thread, shame the photo didn't pan left a bit, i would have had a photo of my grans cafe, also seen up union rd, Andos furniture shop. It was the next 4windows up from the pub, Ando had the house's above the shop and the entrance to them were up the entry at the side of our cafe.
