I listen to "Always" and I'm thinking of fabulous Mrs WW, from happy courting days to the sweetest honeymoon, through all the years, all the sunsets, all the sunrises, all the hard times, near disaste

Moved into our new home today,,now sat quietly apart from a little jig when the music of Dr Hook gets too much to sit still, The site seems to have got back to its friendly ways,,so I'm back,,

yes but where do you get stylst from ?    (not sure spelling Needle or Stylest)

Mary, it is 'stylus'.

Most of the old Dansettes had a stylus called a TC8. It was the reversible, 'flipover' type, which had one stylus for 'microgroove' records such as 45s and LPs and another coarser stylus for the older shellac 78s. You just had to remember to flip it over to suit. It was held in place by a small brass screw.

There are a number of specialist suppliers out there who will supply replacement Styli, ( Styluses,?), and failing that it is possible to fit a more modern cartridge and stylus.

I remember them. We always had a record player at home from my earliest days, and my dad still had a few 78s which were played with one of those flipover heads. In later years we had one of the first stereo record players I'd ever seen, which had two speakers which could be placed on opposite sides of the room.

DJ360.

Be aware that most modern cartridges will not be suitable. The old Dansette type machines were fitted with crystal cartridges whereas almost all modern cartridges are either moving coil or moving magnet which produce a much lower output.

Well I didn't say it was easy!

I think to be honest that by the 50s and 60s most cartridges would be ceramic rather than crystal. Same principle but more reliable and better sounding.

As to output, that's more of a moot point and a brief trawl around the net seems to point to some overlap in output between ceramics and moving magnets, in much he same way that there is now overlap between MMs and MCs, via 'High output MCs.'

Eitherway, it looks like the old ceramics are still available.

Styli for 78s are still available from the likes of Ortofon  I have an Ortofon78 stylus in a mono equivalent of a 'low end' Ortofon cartridge. ..OM3, or OM5 or somesuch. I use it for playing 78s on my old Goldring Lenco B55 deck .

This is just a YouTube clip.

My record player and disc are both better..and much less crackly...

It seems to say 'original'.

Smokey Robinson  wrote and recorded the original..which seems to be heavily sampled in this... and released it in 1965.
