Hi Margie, glad you liked it. One of the happiest clip was of some little Afrikaan children, they were only about 6/7 and the grins on their face was infectious. Also on the Swiss police, I thought funny was a female officer dancing away, with a gun strapped to her hip !

Many, many years ago, having seen him live at the Albert Hall in Nottingham, I bought a Tom Paxton album. When I got it home I realised that side 1 was Tom, and side 2 - wasn’t! Decided to keep it as I quite liked the songs, but it wasn’t until quite recently that I discovered that it was this guy.

Sold the album years ago on ebay as an oddity - a “mis-pressing”, but only got a pittance for it!

Stunning song and production Red.  Old Sam is one of my all time faves...

But.. in a rare late night opportunity I'm listening to the Kinks while Mrs Col is out.

Good one DJ360

The Kinks, part of the sounds of the sixties. Waterloo Sunset has become a classic. Strangely enough never made number 1 but fittingly used in the closing of the London Olympics

Also like Death of a Clown and Plastic Man

....And right back in the groove; a bit of Northern soul. 'Be young be foolish but be happy.'

All in the past now but today I'll welcome 'young at heart' and 'be happy' but will draw a line under 'be foolish'. Had a big enough dose of that when I was young.

And don't forget the lovely Jennifer Warnes' contribution to the song.  She's one of my favourite singers.

I love the song, and I even love the way that the 'Northern' crowd love 'their' music..., but when you think about it 'Northern Soul' is a peculiar beast.  It's not a musical 'genre'.  It's just a collection of tunes which support the highly stylised dance moves which were the core of 'Northern'.

I was playing the Tams earlier hit. 'Hey Girl, Don't Bother Me', and 'Be Young..' etc.. years before I ever heard the term 'Northern Soul'  It seems to me that 'Northern' hoovered up everything from our playlists that fit into their BPM (Beats Per Minute) preferences... which is why they seem to have avoided a lot of the 1960s Stax/Atlantic stuff..which was often slower and funkier.

But whatever.  Here are a few tunes 'off the top of my head', from my time just prior to the flowering of 'Northern'.  The Northern lot eem to have snaffled some, but ignored others.

But today I have mostly been listening to Ray Charles.  Specifically his wonderful album 'Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music'.. in which he presented his own versions of country hits of the time.  Following on from his time with Atlantic records, where he recorded Jazz, Gospel, Blues, R&B etc.. this album set the tone for his 'breakout' from just being seen as a 'race' musician.

But in pure musical terms..and being a sentimental old fart..I love the use of soaring strings and choruses, which, alongside Ray's amazing voice and range, make these ballads so listenable.

I was priveleged to see Ray live on two occasions.

Night!!  :)
