Macca81 0
Did there use to be a bus station where Victoria centre is now? I'm sure when I was a kid in the 80s used to go through double doors and be in a big depot to get the bus home locally at the time. But mate said buses where maid mairien way but I'm adamant Victoria centre use to have a big bus depot?
philmayfield 6,089
Yes there still is a bus station at the rear of the Victoria Centre behind York House.
Macca81 0
Is that the one they used before the Victoria centre one?
philmayfield 6,089
No, I think this one is contemporaneous with the Vic Centre building although it has seen some changes over its lifetime. The previous nearby bus station was on Huntingdon Street.
Macca81 0
Thanks Phil Any idea when they built the new bus depot at Victoria centre? I remember getting a bus home with my grandma in the old once in the 80s
philmayfield 6,089
I believe there was a large bus station underneath the Vic Centre on Milton St. originally but I'm not sure when that was built. The station I was referring to on York St. was much smaller and replaced the original which became extra shopping space for the Vic Centre. I live out of Nottingham and haven't been on a bus in 50 years. There will be others along who will know much more.
TBI 2,351
It was actually upstairs. Victoria Centre bus station was accessed from the left upper floor, above the food court. Buses exited via Cairns St. Very large and busy, it was situated where House of Fraser, upper shops and the Emmett clock are currently located.
The Pianoman 1,531
It still is upstairs. It is now rather more 'open plan' than it was and is further back(?) towards Woodborough Road. Here it is a probably 1990's. That might be me taking passengers onto that Olympian Here's one as it is now
Macca81 0
Brilliant. Many thanks
Macca81 0
Any idea when they stopped using the old station and the new one was opened?
HSR 286
Didn't know about this, according to Wikipedia 1997. Does National Express still operate from there?
notty ash 370
National Express moved to Broad Marsh - following its demolition they are now in temporary accommodation, see https://www.nationalexpress.com/en/help/coach-stations/nottingham
Cliff Ton 10,435
To add to Malcolm (Pianoman)'s photos, this is another view of the place. It was basically an aircraft hangar with buses in it.
The Pianoman 1,531
That one is a much earlier picture than mine.
