philmayfield 5,360
Good if you’re a regular. If, like me, you’ve only been once in the last 40 years, not so good!
The Pianoman 1,482
Free entry into the grounds only I assume?
Jill Sparrow 9,574
It seems to be the practice now to charge an outlandish admission fee but to say that the buyer can return as many times as they like within a specified period of time. The Crich Tramway Museum operate the same strategy. That's fine and dandy when people live locally but not so good for those who don't. What was wrong with the previous system of a fair admission fee for each visit?
Beekay 4,275
Talking of Crich, went there with the wife's cousin and her husband. I bought the tickets and we were told the same info, re coming back. I gave the tickets to cousin as were coming home the day after and not sure of our next visit to Nottingham. Thought no more about it until we found that said cousin and husband were going back to Crich, taking a different couple with them each time. Not only that but they swore blind that they were the original four when the tickets were bought, after being asked by the staff. So we never did get our free returns. (Newhaven Fort operate the same system).
letsavagoo 795
We have had the grandchildren all week so went to the castle the other day. I shelled out my £27 for a family pass. They enjoyed it. It was lovely to go back. I didn’t get chance to look around the ‘castle’ building completely, I don’t walk too well and it was so hot and perhaps it’s not fair to say yet but initial impressions, I preferred it as it was. The grounds are little changed. They have deckchairs dotted around and I sat looking out towards Wilford Hill and had a nice snooze for an hour or so while they played in the adventure park. We’ve already been back, I WILL get my monies worth.
Cliff Ton 9,955
Castle administrators go into liquidation. The makeover from a few years ago obviously hasn't paid its way. Numbers are down and it didn't turn out to be the world-beater as predicted. https://westbridgfordwire.com/breaking-nottingham-castle-closes-to-public-as-trust-appoints-liquidators/
philmayfield 5,360
The extortionate admission fees discouraged visitors.
letsavagoo 795
This is very disappointing news. Since my post dated 12th August I’ve been there probably a dozen times. My grandson asked me to take him only Saturday just gone and we spent several hours there. His request, he loves it there. I don’t know how well this closure was know but I heard staff selling tickets on the premise that ‘you can come back any time for a year’. Pretty disgusted to be honest. LizzieM 9,231
Another good idea ‘spending spree’ by Nottingham City Council goes bang, along with Robin Hood Energy, the Old Market Square, the tram. The Labour Council haven’t a clue ……and never have had…… while ever they are in control our council tax money will be wasted on expensive hair-brain ideas. We pay the second highest council tax in the country and can’t even get the streets cleaned.

Pretty disgusted to be honest. Liquidation isn't normally announced in advance, hence people turning up for work to find they're locked out. I worked for a company that went into liquidation, we were given 2 hrs notice to get home in the company vans / cars before the insurance ran out and the liquidators took over. I was nearly 3hrs from home..
mary1947 1,879
Its is such sad news? Our Castle going into ilguidation, WHY!!! it is our castle that's the city of Nottingham, and it belong's to us, our city we grew up in, made our homes here, use to have excellent shop's Market's , Dance hall's, collage's Dury Hill, Burton's Toby.s Griffins, Pearson's ect what is happening to Nottingham? A decent Square where you could sit and people whatch, to be a city you need a castle and cathedral if our castle goe's will Nottingham go back to just being a town? When will they ever learn, when will they ever learnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. Just a suggestion but if all member's put in the kitty £1 00 would be able to buy the castle? Rob.L 1,027
The Castle was being run by a Charitable Trust, not the City Council. The Trust determined admission prices, and it’s the Trust that has gone into liquidation. The council still own the Castle and it appears that they will take over control. https://www.nottinghamcastle.org.uk/about-the-trust/
LizzieM 9,231
Yes it has been RUN by the Trust but who funded the £30 million re-development? The tax-payers.
Rob.L 1,027
Only partly. Most of the £29.4m came from the National Heritage Lottery Fund (£13.9m), D2N2 (£7m), as well as money from Arts Council England, plus fundraising by the Nottingham Castle Trust. mary1947 1,879
The group who ran the castle should be thrown into the nearest hole. The Castle is part of our heritage and I am sure if they had put there heads together we would not be in this mess, did they not think ? Summer have open air play/open markets/ music venues/ weddings / just a few things they could have done. Oh !!!! and how many of us used to visit the castle in summer, looking for girls/boys (when younger of cause)
Oztalgian 2,858
Obviously, I have not been to the "castle" since the major revamp. As a kid Mum and Dad took me many years ago and I was so disappointed, we never went again and we spent most of that day on the Trent Embankment. Calling it a castle must be against the trade descriptions act, it was just a Victorian house of no particular merit full of old paintings, pottery and costumes. The only bit that looks like a castle was the gatehouse and part of the ramparts. Looking at the history it was "one of the ruins that the council knocked about a bit"
benjamin1945 15,496
A castle for defence it certainly was............that is if you ever tried climbing up the 'Rock face' from the ''TRIP'' side..........which is what me and my old friend 'Harry Fewkes' did...whe we were about 10............very difficult but it saved us both a penny..... Tried to get Brenda and Doreen to do it years later.....but they were having none of it...(Trina and Sandra)......love the Castle and the memories it brings.....hope its soon sorted........
MelissaJKelly 2,080
Agree with a lot of the comments here. It has been modernised beyond recognition of a castle and feels like there's almost nothing that's original there anymore. In terms of things to do in Nottingham according to Tripadvisor, Primark and the Tram are more noteworthy than the Castle.
burtkt 4
We have visited recently, and I know they have done alot of maintenance work but a real lack of a Robin Hood theme, we was abit underwhelmed by the so called upgrade. Massive screens inside showing history videos, I really feel they lost the plot and what a real waste of money after lasting just over a year.
