Some great old songs here. Was Linden Lea the tune of Love Me Tender? I always felt sad that my kids didnt have the same amount of singing in school. We had the radio on at 11am for Singing Together (

'Within the woodland flowery gladed......'      Me too Margie, hated it with a passion. Our music teacher, in hindsight a gentle old soul, was passionate about playing the recorder and traditional songs. Now had she gone with Bill Haley......

This old song Linden Lea  was recorded by the brilliant folk  fiddler Dave Swarbrick of Fairport Convention brilliant version.

Actually named one of my previous houses Linden Lea.

I remember DANCING the dashing white sergeant but never sang it..

I had to look up arbutus …. A strawberry tree?  Never heard of that song.  I suppose it’s because I’m older than most on here and times had changed a bit …

I taught that song to a class when I was teaching. They sang it at a concert, all dressed in gumboots and flat caps. They all did the accent, too. Well it was a Yorkshire school. The performance was hilarious. They really hammed it up and at the end one little lad came out to the front and recited the Yorkshireman's creed:

See all, hear all, say nowt!

Eat all, drink all, pay nowt!

And if ever tha does owt for nowt,

Allus do it fer thissen!

I seem to remember a song, who's title escapes me... it goes...

"On a hill there stands a lady,

Who she is I do not know,

I will ask her if she'll marry me,

She will answer,

Yes or no.

Oh no John, no John no.

Anybody any idea ?

I think PP is the senior here unless anyone else will admit to being in their 80’s. At least we’re probably the only ones here who didn’t go to Berridge!

Believe it or not BK it’s called ‘Oh no John’.

Similar to a song the girls sang when skipping. When the girl named the next person she went out and whoever was called in started again. Anyone who stopped the rope was out. A variation was everyone stayed in and skipped...

On a mountain stands a lady

who she is I do not know

All she wants is gold and silver

all she wants is a nice young man

So call in .... while I go out to play.

Linden Lea was written in 1901 by one William Barnes.  One of my favourite melodies of all time.

From primary school I recall us being forced to sing Marie's Wedding, 'Twas On A Monday Morning, 'Soldier Soldier Will You Marry Me' and horrifically for a young boy... 'In My Sweet Little Alice Blue Gown'.

The only song I recall being made to sing in HP was the Eriskay Love Lilt:

Vair me o, ro van o
Vair me o, ro van ee
Vair me o, o ru o ho
Sad am I without thee.

But, we also spent seemingly half of the first couple of years at HP learning the Triumphal March from Aida, for our turn at the 'once every five years 'big' speech day' at the Albert Hall.

'Glory to Isis who from all wardeth away disaaaaaaaarrrrrsssterrr

To Egypt's Royal maaaaaaaarrrrrsssssterrr

Raise we our festive song.....'

Bom, te bom te bom te bom.

'Glory!!!'

Bom to bom te bom te bom.

'Glory!!!'

etc.....
