Does anyone know anything about the King's cinema on Front Street? According to a website I saw, the cinema was closed in 1947 and demolished in 1956. However, I clearly recall going up the steps and into a Woollworth's store on the site up until the late 50s or early 60s.  Am I worng and I am remembering a time before  '56?

A quick look through a couple of 'Old Arnold' books produced two references.

One said "...this picture house opened in 1915 and lasted until the early 1960s"  and the other said "...opened in 1912, it later became a dance hall and then a shop before demolition..."

Definitely Woolies after 1955, when I moved to Arnold, untill they moved across the road into what is now Iceland.

References on here to Empress;

Just found this, it was Empress, then Kings then Empress agin;

But it says demolished 1956 which is clearly wrong,? those steps look remarkably like Woolies old ones.

Picture here labelled as Kings.

Small building next door I remember as Rowbottoms Butcher, then Cross Keys pub, still there today up to the corner of Ravenswood.

Going off at a tangent, the Woolworth's link in Stuart C's previous post is interesting.

It lists more than 300 branches of Woolies, but doesn't mention the one which was closest to me as a kid, the branch on Southchurch Drive, Clifton.

And there's a Woolworth thread on here......   https://nottstalgia.com/forums/topic/9475-how-many-woolworths/
