burtkt 4
Hi All I went to a local Pet Shop today Aspley Pet supplies to buy a few tropical fish always been a keen interest of ours , i took me a good look on Google to find a pet shop let alone one that sold tropical fish, noticed Kays Pet Centre closed down a while back fond memories in the 80's hehe of the place.I know the big superstore ones are dotted around all over won't mention their name but the little Independent shops are all but gone what I can see.Was a real trip down memory lane buying fish from a small pet shop. Is there a Independent one near you?

Cliff Ton 10,008
Many people will remember the pet shop on Trinity Walk. I thought it was still there, but looking at various websites it closed down in April this year.
FLY2 10,106
Many garden centres have Maidenhead Aquatics outlets. They definitely sell fish there.
Cliff Ton 10,008
I wonder if it is such a bad thing there are no longer any small independent pet shops. My vague memory from younger days is that they were often the kind of place where animals were treated like any other commodity on a shelf, and just stuck in small, unsuitable cages and inappropriate conditions. Similar to old zoos where you saw lions or bears in a space the size of a garden shed. 5
nonnaB 4,761
When I lived at home my parents had fish in 2 very large tanks. One was for tropical fish and the other for sea water fish. ( Clownfish, dominoes, sea horses, tube worms etc) they were really beautiful but a lot of work to keep them. I remember that they had to travel quite a way to get the sort of fish they wanted as my dad was really into it trying to get the more exotic fish. We had a tank for a while brought about by the enthusiasm of my dad. They were beautiful things to watch especially the clown fish and the dominoes , they used to have a mad half hour every evening and they were so noisy.

He and his siblings were in a little cage and, looking back, were barely old enough to have been taken from their mum. He was tiny and shivered on my knee all the way home on the bus. I can't remember exactly but I think mum had to just give him milk and gravy at first. We didn't know any better in those days, but I'm pleased they don't still sell puppies like that! He cost 7/6 btw..

Yes very true some small shop indeed was poor but do the bigger type superstores do any better sadly not from what I have seen.

Hi Maidenhead Aquatics outlets have been around years and on a recent visit to one outside Nottingham their fish standards in health very good in general. But these are bigger places incorporated into garden centre. radfordred 6,278
Kayes pet shop on Trinity Walk is now split into two shops, vape shop & second hand shop that never opened? Still some dead flys in the window, if that counts?
FLY2 10,106
There's still an independent pet shop on Main St, Bulwell, opposite Tesco's.

burtkt 4
I know the point that was made some small Petshops were poor for pets , but it's sad that some shops that treated pets well have closed and provided a nice friendly personal service not a faceless large superstore. 1
HSR 276
Remember the Trinity square pet shop, thought the animals appeared well treated. Were they Piranha in the tanks? high tanks to the right of the door, certainly looked like it. Remember feeling sorry for the Mcaw, not for sale me thinks but got lot's of attention! Shame to see loss of the high street pet shop, recall a good one in Arnold. Didn't know that aquatic supermarkets existed!
FLY2 10,106
The demise of the pet shops is similar to the way other high street retail outlets have vanished due to the superstores and online shopping. Model Railway shops, toy shops, florists, hardware stores, and many other small specialist shops.
