It would make CT's job far easier too, if we all adhered to a bit of online etiquette and common sense.

He has to make numerous movements to shift content from one topic to another, as folk have not investigated to see if a suitable topic currently exists. Surely to God there's sufficient topics in existence.

Overquoting too. We're mostly sensible enough to scroll back a few posts for goodness sake.

Also when folks have diverged unnecessarily, and the topic flow has changed dramatically. That's annoying !

Another thing that used to irritate me intensely, was when a serious discussion was developing, and someone would disrupt it with a childish and futile quip. Luckily, we almost seem to be free of such scenarios just lately.  compusmash

I've just noticed it's 9 years ago today - July 24th 2010 - that I first registered on Nottstalgia.   Have I been wasting my time ?

I've been a member of Nottstalgia since 2011 and have always had a lot of respect for Cliff Ton. He's done his job as a Moderator in an  unbiased and friendly way when other members became a little co

I enjoyed the ‘Posts and Sheds’ topic, it lightened up what was becoming a rather tiresome and boring forum.  Nobody is dominating the site now and the contributors enjoy friendly banter, much like No

 I wonder who said:

" I always try to inject a bit of humour even on a serious subject."

"I try and get over my points in an un-agressive manner with an element fun. Very occasionally I sail a bit close to the wind and hope I get away with it."

;)  Just askin....

Brew, my attitude towards the world, and my outlook on life has changed considerably since those distant days.

I think that a lot of members attitudes and tolerances have been pushed to the limit in the ensuing time, and are closer for it.  :Friends:

Which can lead, though flustration and being polite, and i quote, childish & futile gulp.

I think if people weren't so trigger happy and me, me, me, things would improve. Simply reading the thread title would be a good start.

Edit..took me over ten mins to pull of the edited quote! I need to upgrade this three inch screen!

When Mick asked me if I’d consider being a mod, I accepted without really thinking - or understanding - what it would involve. It had as much impact as someone saying ‘have a nice day’.

It’s when things start to go wobbly or complicated that you have to decide if you’re actually going to get your finger out and do something......or pretend you aren’t there......or give up and “let the buggers sort it out themselves”.

One positive thing I’ve learned  - which is useful in real life as well as Nottstalgia - is to not immediately react to any situation which crops up. Don’t say the first thing that comes into your head. If I had done that at various times in the past, I would've left the country a long time ago.

And bear in mind that the others Ayup, Katyjay and Denshaw have all been at it longer than me, so I’m still only a beginner.

Your'e spot on about not immediately reacting cliff ton,,,,when i first joined in 2014 i think i was quite Gobby,,,then thought 'what a Prat' and toned mesen down,,,

We have always had some folk who have a lot to say,,,which is fine,,but in the past they went too far,,and did nowt but argue,,,then quit or were banned.

In my time on here i find the present participants the nicest (well nearly all),,would love to see a few return who have disappeared of late,,,,crankypig and Moody cow being but two............

Funny, thought is was me.. DJ ! Not that I'm. bothered, here to leave my memories.

Noticed, not for the first time, some new member's joining, but not posting. If the 'hows your day' thread was given the same criteria as the political thread, not sure, is it over 200 posts? and all contributors appear to qualify ...then newcomers might not feel so intimidated..or dare I say bored.

I would have thought new member's come here to talk about Nottingham and thier memories and have very little interest in day to day activities.

This is in no way a criticism of the 'hows your day' thread. Just an overall observation.

Not sure I follow you HSR. Some have been members for YEARS and never posted, so it's not just recent joiners. Perhaps they just like to read and not post which is fine, there is no way to tell if they are intimidated or bored. Perhaps they are purists and only want to read Nottingham related topics and that too is OK.

Most join, as you say, for the Nottingham connection, I know I did but as you become more involved you take an interest in the other topics. Some you like and join in, some leave you cold and you never bother with. It's been said that this forum has evolved over time and is, in my opinion, all the better for it, I reckon there is something for everyone..

How do 'Hows Your Day' and 'Politics'  have different criteria?

I hear what you say HSR.....but i reckon   ''hows your day'' has a place,,,its about everyday occurrences in the lives of Nottingham folk past and present, its what we all have in common,,i find most threads of some interest a few bore me but i respect that others enjoy them.

I also think that ''hows your day'' leads people to get to know each other a bit,,,especially when ''Banter'' is employed,,,this is in no way of criticism to your good self,,,i believe differences in all things make our world a much more interesting place,,,

Anyway 'have a nice day'' and if its half interesting tell us about it,,,,,,lol

Additionally, a large number of people join and then never return simply because they presumably forgot they ever joined in the first place, and couldn't find the site again anyway if they tried. I'd guess only about 2-3% of people who register actually go on to take part on even a semi-regular or occasional basis.

We definitely need a few threads which show the human side of peoples' characters (assuming they are reasonably civilised). If the site was restricted  to nothing-but-Nottingham it could turn into an anorak's paradise, with a small number of people discussing a specialist subject in minute detail - inducing boredom in many others.

And the number of Nottingham-only subjects which can be covered is  ultimately limited. If a topic is introduced today, it's quite likely that there will already be an existing thread on that subject from 6-7 years ago. We all have an ever-decreasing amount of memory/brain power.

Very occasionally though, a very interesting and informative post can  get lost amid the chit chat, which can be annoying for the poster.

Some time ago, a very respected member posted a really good piece of information, which became engulfed by what someone had eaten for breakfast.

On the whole though, as you say Ben, there's something for everyone on here.

Certainly is. It's like the library- all the other books don't get in the way of the ones you're interested in.

Anyone seen the piece in the paper about the book "St, Anns, the end of an era"? - looks to be a fascinating record.

To quote a much overused phrase. This site now caters "For the many, not just the few". Long may it continue.

There's definitely NO Hoi Polloi on here. Several wrongly assumed they were, and have eventually found that they were not !

There's a sort of hierarchy of course, due to length of membership, and quantity of posts, but no one person on here is better than anyone else. NS caters for every walk of life.

I've started a separate thread on this subject. It's big enough to have its own page.

The 'Hoi Polloi' Simply means 'the many' or 'the people' depending on context.. Don't know what you thought it meant...
