Cliff Ton 10,457
Nearly missed this, it first appeared on Sunday but I've only just noticed it. Another NEP collection of old photos - this time Trinity Square over the years. https://www.nottinghampost.com/news/local-news/gallery/trinity-square-40-pictures-showing-3642034
fogrider 179
Great views of the City, good to see. On the 1952 aerial photo, there appears to be a turntable in the south east corner of the station, I wasn't aware of that, do the railway buffs know more ? Regards all….. philmayfield 6,115
I remember the turntable. You could see it when you looked over the wall on Parliament St. To the right of the church looking uphill was where the nearby British School of Motoring used to park their cars. I used to start my lessons from there back in 1960.
Waddo 921
Hi fogrider, not a train buff, but I remember seeing a turntable down there when I went trainspotting as a lad. Maybe a train buff will confirm, but whilst on the subject, can any one tell me, was the station dug out or was the ground formed naturally and then used for it's purpose? Cliff Ton 10,457
The station was built in a hole which was dug specially for the occasion.
Waddo 921
Thanks Clifton, blimey, that's a lot of spoil to get shifted, especially in the days before the equipment we have available now was around!!
Cliff Ton 10,457
Re: the turntable. You can see it here near the left corner. The road across the top is Glasshouse Street, and Parliament Street going diagonally across the lower right.
Stuart.C 491
There were 2 turntables originally acording to theses plans from here; https://www.railwayarchive.org.uk/track-plans?doc=33
fogrider 179
The above posts are really interesting info to an old trainspotter, thanks all. If anyone wants a current steam experience, North Yorks railway have webcams at Grosmont and Goathland. I love watching (and hearing) the loco's climb Goathland bank, 1/49, don't have to leave the house either ! Winter timetable a bit slim but there are Santa specials on the weekends....
