The origin of the disease is very difficult to work out. It was first publicised in China, but there is evidence of coronavirus elsewhere before the retrospectively-traced first cases there in October. There is a possibility at least that it was lurking in a number of places before the right conditions arose for an epidemic. The WHO is currently doing a detailed investigation.

Spanish flu, immediately after WW1, is a good example of misrepresentation. It got a lot of publicity as Spanish newspapers were not censored at the time, whereas in most of Europe and America, news was suppressed. It is likely that it started in America a year or two earlier, but no one knows for sure.

There was a chest infection going around late last year. Loads of people had it, think I picked it up whilst I was invigilating at the school. It was a really bad chest infection, made it hard to breath but a course of anti-biotics helped although the cough lingered a while after.

A neighbour of mine who works on power lines in all weathers and conditions and is a strong lad. was flattened by something like that for 3 or 4 weeks over Christmas.  He was off work for so long that his boss demanded he returned his vehicle.. tools etc.  To which he responded.. "You want them.. you come for them.. If I'm too sick to work I'm too sick to bring your stuff back".

His approach must have worked 'cos he's still working for the same boss.

Melbourne has been hit by a resurgence of corona virus with the number of cases in the hundreds over the last few days. The media reporting indicates that it resulted from poorly handled security of returnees in hotel quarantine. It has now spread to pockets in New South Wales resulting in Queensland closing its borders to people from two council areas in NSW.

Meanwhile here in South Australia we are still Covid19 free, however I fully expect a resurgence after authorities allow 25,000 per game in to two Aussie rules game being held in Adelaide in the coming days.

I really do not understand the logic that makes them think they can do this safely at this point in time.

Keep safe everyone and remember, it is not over until its over and we have a proven ant-viral that can be rolled out to all.

Like, not because I like your post but because of the activities of the mass being naive, which doesn't mean I approve of mass meetings.

I hope and pray for the sake of the three thousand poor people imprisoned and terrified in those tower blocks in Melbourne that the administration and bureaucracy of the authorities there is a darn sight better than it would be here. Feeding and caring for those prisoners is a mammoth task and I have little faith in the ability of the authorities so to do.

Regarding mass gatherings, we can obviously expect a "surge" in London following the mob gatherings there over the last few weeks.

In the last couple of days we've been having an influx of immigrants. We seem to be the first port of entry. There are boatloads that have to be tested and there are many that are positive. Granted they are all under control and for that we should be thankful but there are still thousands of Italians who still have to be tested. This country is only so big and I wonder where they will all go. I've lost count of the refugees that have fled their own country in the last few years. Do they know there's a pandemic here when they climb aboard that tiny boat and wonder if they're going to have a better life? I feel so sorry for them, most have left their families in search of work, when they are sent to other parts they find any job that pays, mostly very much underpaid menial jobs.

Lots just live in hovels and some turn themselves criminals. Is it worth a scary boat journey to risk life and to end up either in poverty or suffering with cv which is probably the most common outlook.

Nonna, re your last sentence...

they must be fleeing from something much worse in their own country.  In their position I think we would probably all do the same for the sake our own and our family’s lives.
Migration has been happening since the dawn of time as people kept moving to where there was relative safety and food just to survive.  I believe that the earth belongs to everyone regardless of creed, ethnicity or anything else. (However, I know it’s not that simple.... I was just taking it back to basic principles)

Oh Dear... the Kalergi Plan..   Not really needed..

What we are seeing really isn't difficult to explain.  Most of the World continues to interfere in the Middle East and North Africa.

Much of this thinly diguises continuing 'squabbles' between the USA, GB, Russia and their respective allies.

Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen and lots of other places de-stabilised, while we continue to manage friendly relations with Saudi Arabia which is nobody's true friend. We continually fail to condemn or prevent Israel's blatant land grab.

Meanwhile the populations of these countries are subject to revolution, dictatorship, religious oppression by the likes of the Taliban, ISIS, Iran's 'Revolutionary Guard' and so on.

Is it any wonder that the poor sods see Europe as a refuge?

And is it not ironic that we are reaping what we have sown?

I won't comment further outside of the Politics thread.

Our responses are going to be determined by what we mean by immigration..  I think for most of us that left the UK since WW 2 our intent was to integrate.  Not to form little sub communities of English folks trying to live exactly as we did in the UK.  FWIW it seems to me that many coming to our countries are not really immigrants but rather refugees.  Unfortunately in many cases being used by powerful monied interests to destabilise the countries they are moving to.   The ultimate object seems to be a one world system of equally demoralised people who will be easier to control.  Just my five cents worth.  I hope I'm wrong, but to use an expression.  I've never seen owt like the current world situation in my life.

I can't help feeling sorry for those people that live in areas close to state borders especially when all their services, doctors, shops etc are in another state that has closed the border with the state they live in and having to get a pass to go over an arbitrary line on a map

I cannot believe the closed minds and biased views on here. As with the political thread, will the mods please make this thread only available when logged in so that those of us with a more questioning mind and sense of reason no longer are subjected to such offensive material.

Margie, I think you may have misinterpreted my post. I know quite well these immigrants( they are called immigrants here) are fleeing probably a far worse situation. In fact they are refugees and very badly treated buy those who take their money , very often life savings, and bring them on overcrowded boats that look as though a puff of wind would collapse and send them all into the sea. Many can't swim so although they are now coming into the country thick and fast I do understand they are escaping. There is one member of parliament that is trying to stop them coming into the country and he's nasty about it. Italians understand the situation but many are not too pleased about it. The immigrants once their health is checked and put in order they are given a sort of wage, they go into centers and hopefully other countries will accept them . A lot won't  so we have them. Unemployment is high among the Italians so we have to support the immigrants too. It's no easy situation.

I was emphasizing the courage that these people must have to venture into a boat not knowing what the future will bring to them.

The biggest criminals are those that bring them over. They are in boats that have no sanitary units.  No cover in case of bad weather and no privacy not even an arms width between them. I often wonder if they knew what it would be like. But suppose in their desperation they take a great risk.

Years ago we had a lot of Albanians coming into the country, we had a sudden increase in various crimes. Eventually things sorted themselves out and it was quiet. There were two sisters who were trying to set up home and were looking for furniture. As the house we bought around this time was full of old fashioned but beautiful furniture. We offered some things to these sisters.  They turned their noses up and said they they wanted my furniture, they were quite peeved when I pointed out it wasn't possible but if they were in need surely usable furniture should have been useful until they could afford to buy what they wanted. Now we have every sort of  person . beside Albanians , Macedonians , Polish, , Chinese , Ukraine and I don't know what else. Crime rates are not high but when there's the vendemmia and holidays times it goes up.

I hope these immigrants come to a happy ending as one young Albanian lad did years ago. There was a boat leaving and although he was only a young lad he hopped board . No word to his family but he loved dancing and has made a career in dancing and is a big success.  But unfortunately it won't happen to a lot of them.

We're sailing pretty close to Dens famous giant bold font here.

I strongly object to the sanctimonious tone of some comments but will go no further - we should be on the political pages by now...

Going back a few days, there was a point where CV and politics crossed and couldn't be separated. (The Trump mask case).

The thread has drifted towards more blatant politics, so posts may have to be moved or removed.
