Scene Before In Nottingham

Recommended Posts

I have been spending my time in lockdown adding detail to the 'Scene Before in Nottingham' website. I have not been out taking photos but I have added much written word, hopefully which you will find of interest.

The latest article - about Rock Cemetery. Any extra information welcome.   https://scenebeforeinnottingham.wordpress.com/home/landmarks/church-rock-cemetery/

It happened. I was in the Vernon at the time minding me own business, watching said film when a row of 5 or 6 seats arced across the auditorium in front of the screen accompanied by a lot of shouting

I did A levels at Digby around that time Lizzie and was on the student union . I also used to DJ between the bands breaks on the Saturday night dances . I do remember there being a folk club

I've spent the last half hour going through the website and it's definitely grown a lot since the last time I looked at it.

A surprising number of places, events, people, things, etc that I'd forgotten about. Keep up the good work !

Does anyone know?
There was a club called the Calypso on Byard Lane, later the New Calypso opened on Commerce Square.
I can see that the New Calypso was opened around 1973/4 by Carlton Forbes the cricketer. Did he own the original?
Does anyone know any details? Did anyone got to either of these clubs?

Moz, didn’t Gary Sobers have something to do with a club on High Pavement, may have been in Commerce Square I suppose, I just have a vague memory of it.
I know that a certain friend of ours will have more information, have you asked her?

Thanks for that article,  Moz, very interesting.  i love wandering around old cemeteries, i have some relatives in the paupers graves, Chulla showed me their names once. They were hard to read then,  I guess they got worse later. We could walk down into St. Anne's Valley at that time, not any more.

An interesting read.

One of the big problems with cemeteries these days is that they can be inhabited by undesirable, still-living people who have strange lifestyles and leave the remains of their lifestyle lying around.

We then settled down to watch the rest of the film when the cops barged in, marched to the front and working front to back cleared the whole auditorium, guiIty and innocent. I never got a refund.

The crazy thing is...after all these years ...i still remember just about all there names...such was the impression they left on me..............

When we had football meetings on a Sunday night at the ''Tavern'' in the 'Gents only room'' our Wives/girlfriends would be in the Bar with them.....Dancing to the Juke box...60s and 70s..

Donna met many of them in the 80s.....and loved their sense of humour...they all made a real fuss of her......She found Nottingham so different from the South and really loved it.........

Does anyone have any information about wild white cattle in Wollaton Park in the recent past? I believe some may have been re-introduced in the 1980s but they are not there now.

The Italian restaurant on St James street owned by Michael Grey mentioned earlier was Valentino's. My dad and I both worked there. I was a wine waiter and my dad was the barman. Michael Greys son ran the French bistro 3 or 4 doors further up on the same side.

I worked for Michael Grey for about a year when he was senior partner at Turner Barrows and Moss the lawyers. I was the group accountant for the numerous businesses he ran including Spinrock Construction. I was enticed away by a substantially better offer and was very pleased to leave!

Does anybody recall the location of Vino's?    I know iv'e been in it, searched this site, nothing,   googled, found a link here...

I remember a wine bar (but not its name) which was on the lower end of Mansfield Road,  approximately opposite the end of Woodborough Road, or a bit further up. It only existed for a few years in the 80s. The entrance was a door at street level, and the rest of the bar was upstairs on the first floor. I didn't like it much, but never liked wine bars anyway. This place isn't mentioned on Moz's website, but it might've been Vino's.

There was a wine bar in Trinity Square/Forman St. back in the 70’s/80’s whose name I cant remember but it was run by a chap called Jeremy Gisborne who both Margie and I knew as we were  in the same class at Arno Vale primary. He used to live on Greys Rd. Woodthorpe near to Joseph Giemza whom Nonna may have known as he had a prestige hairdressing salon on Market  St. A bit of what they used to call a nancy back in those days!
