Russ 2
Bernis at the time were far better than Beefeaters and brewers fayre [which in my opinion are flamin' crap] I think Del Boy would agree with you there.Remember the hilarious Only Fools And Horses sketch when he took a posh girl out for a meal? She was dressed elegantly with her blonde hair tied up and long dress, while he wore a tuxedo, white shirt and dickie-bow - not normally the attire for dining at a Berni Inn ! .... 23
Half an hour later there was a huge thunderstorm, the surrounding hills ran like rivers swamping the drains and flooding the car park and pub several feet deep.Had to take refuge upstairs to avoid the flood...so much for crisps on the carpet,it was knee deep in sewage. I reckon I can remember that flood. I can see the sight of a rowing boat in the middle of a flooded Mansfield Road at the Hucknall Road junction. Wonder what year that would have been? poohbear 1,360
If my kids age is anything to go on about '79 A gang of bikers were in the Grosvenor bar at the time. They pulled off a downpipe from the gutter and about ten of 'em punted out to the main road in a rubbish skip.Firemen made them push it back. They gathered on higher ground and one by one groups of them held their bikes upside down and tried to shake the water out of their engines. A major drain refurb was carried out afterwards to try and cure the problem. With the hills of Hucknall,Mansfield, and Magdala Roads all coming together there must have been a hell of a lot of water in that valley during a storm. Paul.
sussexred 25
In fact it used to get so busy the car park was full with people just chatting and drinking - not sure about the year but I would agree with 73 although it could have been 72. Then they introduced a dress code and the place became as quiet as a morgue for while. The Grosvenor was where we always started before venturing into town. We must have been there at the same time Zab ... on the same bus even. Was anyone else out there in Nottstalgialand there too?

Was anyone else out there in Nottstalgialand there too? 71-73 was my time at the grosvenor..if i didn't have the car i too would have been on the sandiacre 4 into town and then the city bus up mansfield road..what a trek but loved the vibe
hippo girl 1,995
last week i went to a gig in the golden fleece on mansfield road and it so reminded me of the grosvenor days of the 7o's ( the average age was 24!!) but very much like the crowd back then
68fb 0
I think the competition from the Savoy across the road might have effected the Grosvenor trade aboutthat time. I remember dining on Duck in orange sauce in the Savoy. In the 80's I think me and the beefsteak went in? I have memories of a large plate of horses douvres?(sp) Ian may remember this, or it could have been two diffrent people? Duck in orange sauce (Duck-a-l'Orange) was the height of sophistication on a Saturday night menu in the City during the 70's with the advent of "Boil-In-The-Bag" convenience food & the beginnings of Microwave use in modern Hotel Kitchens, the food item e.g. the Duck dish came in sealed plastic bags, mostly produced from the Alveston Kitchens, frozen food specialists, these were placed on clip bars over a tank of simmering water topped with small plastic balls to prevent excess evaporation, plunged down & a timer set after which the said bag would lunge for freedom on it's plunging bar & a timer would go off indicating to the (Chef) that he had produced yet another classic French dish lol This was part of the operation when I worked as a chef in The Strathdon Hotel in the 70's, at that particular time, although a 3 day week for a lot of people, it was still a 7 day week for us, but with 3 days electric only made for interesting working conditions
Charlie 11
Is the Strathdon still going? I only remember chicken in the basket (plastic with a serviette at the bottom and a 6oz sirloin steak with chips and button mushrooms (tinned) - top of the menu! That was at the Berni on Mansfield road - with the statue of the horse? Hart?

I just remember some bird behind the bar asking if I was sober now? Limey 242
Scampi was also a biggy (I don't dare mention the ubiquitous Prawn Cocktail on their menu plus Gammon & chips with a choice of topping (fried egg or Pineapple!) Lord, how we dined lol... Not to mention the "Irish Coffee" to wash it all down! (Actually, the gammon & chips was a favorite of mine - still is!)

Funny you should say that, me too (with the fried egg!) I never actually made a Berni Inn to eat (drink, yes ), with working catering in the evenings it was always a curry house. Beefsteak 305
Quite partial to a bit of Gammon myself .We had a whole one for Sunday dinner, which also made two lots of butties and ended up in a Cheese sauce and Chicken concoction that I made for dinner last night. Lord, how we dined lol Unbelievable wasn't it ?! Fried egg OR pineapple.Wonder what the reaction would have been if you had asked for both ? Rather like hotels who offered grapefruit segments OR cornflakes.Very much a take it or leave it attitude in those days. They hadn't cottoned on to the fact that you have to make available what customers want not just what they want to serve you. Certainly used to have a statue of a hart outside near the main road. Although I've livd near there for a long time I can't quite remember if it was a Bernie Inn or maybe a Toby Inn? People call the place 'Sizzlers' now after the chain that runs it. It's name is still The White Hart though.

Charlie 11
Well my friend has just reminded me that the manager in the days when we used to go to the Grosvenor was Colin Brumpton - any of you remember him?
zab 47
Well my friend has just reminded me that the manager in the days when we used to go to the Grosvenor was Colin Brumpton - any of you remember him? If it's the chap I'm thinking of, I think he was moved on to another pub - not sure why, but Boston (Lincs) seems to ring a bell. As for getting to the Grosvenor, rarely had to get transport there and back as I lived on Haydn Road in those days.

I think he had a surly face - but he was a nice enough guy if you knew him! I had my first ever licqeur coffee at the Grosvenor - I'd never heard of them before that. Had a bit of a thing for 'em for a while after that!
