Murder on Moore Road, Mapperley?

Recommended Posts

Assuming neighbour Violet Hoare was still at number 8 in 1969 and then looking on streetview , you could deduce the bungalow would be number 6 .

None of the neighbouring houses are bungalows though there appear to be changes with some new builds.

From a thread in 2010 about the Pigalle Club on this very forum...

Posts by OLDACE:

"At the table were the two Londoners, Jack Packham (fruit machines), Tony Woods (then chairman of Forest and owner of Jersey Kapwood) Dennis? Sheldon (car dealer and murderer to be)."

"Sheldon was a gambler, when he got into money trouble, he would go to casinos, see who was there and then go and burgle their houses. He was caught and got 5 years IIRC. While in prison his wife saw another man.

On release he went home and strangled his wife. He left the body on the living room carpet next to an electric fire which he left switched on. He left the house, in the morning his daughter, I cannot remember her age, probably 6 or 7 found her dead mother. her face was badly burned.Sheldon got life."

"Sheldon might originally have been from Derby way. When I read about the crime in the Evening Post I had quit the Casino scene. Sorry I can't give you any more details. Regret to say I always got on well with him. Didn't know what he was up to. Murder may have happened in Nottm not Derby."

I see mention of Jack Packham in the above post. There was a Jack Packham who was manager/licencee of the Piccadilly Club in Bulwell in the late 1970’s. Don’t know if it’s the same man but the club had a ‘iffy’ reputation.

Back to the bungalow on corner of Porchester Rd/Sandford Rd, they started demolishing it a couple of weeks ago.  The roof has gone so far and they are stripping out the rooms.  They have also cleared the brush from the large rear garden.  Looks more like the work of a jobbing builder with mates rather than a property development company (no large machinery used from what I saw).

Or maybe it's somebody chancing their luck and seeing what they can grab before anyone else notices.

There was  previous planning approval for 10 flats, (Jan 2014)

That may have expired or may have been preserved by some initial work being started before the expiry date.

Also another for the same scheme in June 2017.

Total Reclaims are doing the demolition, according to the planning application.

Their methodology, as submitted in the  planning application for demolition, stipulates hand demolition initially due to the proximity of the neighbouring building, extract below,,

Slight correction on earlier statement, now removed,

There is also a Planning application to remove the 7 Sycamores (TPO) on Porchester and replace with "Hornbeam (Carpinus betulu)".

I doubt the Sycamores would survive given the excavation required to provide underground (with respect to Porchester rd) car parking.

It’s probably because car parking in the city is so extortionate for a whole day that it’s cheaper to park in the suburbs and take the bus. I see people parking in Lowdham and taking the the train into Nottingham. In our village there are no buses and although there is a regular train service from Lincoln to Nottingham, very few trains stop at our station.

Do the trains still stop regularly at Fiskerton Station? I seem to remember it was quite a way out of the village and that Bleasby had a station at one time.

Fiskerton

Yes, I remember the MGO 209 bus from Mansfield to Newark via Southwell/Fiskerton, used to catch it to go fishing.

The other service from Mansfield to Newark was the 208 via Southwell/Upton I never caught that bus

Bungalow on Sandford/Porchester now razed.  Garden cleared.  Polythene sheet screening attached to fence at Porchester side of plot.

Development at top of Porchester stalled (still at street level).

Plot where Speedo and Eddie (formerly Millennium Motors) was: nothing commenced (just an open expanse of flat concrete base still there.
