Thurland Street Rail Tunnel Petition

Recommended Posts

There was, maybe still is, a proposal by the council to use the tunnel as part of the route for the new battery trams.

I was lucky enough to participate in one of the visits organised by Janine a few years ago, along with Enigma1st of this parish.  The first thing that I noticed was how it was so mucky under foot, seemingly untouched since the rails were lifted (we left a trail of sooty footprints in the Vic Centre car park on exiting the tunnel!)

You'd think they could open it up to provide some revenue; perhaps a series of stalls to form a 'linear market'?  Sure it would need several access points to the streets and maybe a lift or two but all technically feasible.  It houses the District Heating Scheme hot water pipes (along its eastern wall) but they could be boxed in.  The southern end could be diverted (because someone blocked the exit with an art gallery) in a westerly direction to emerge in whatever replaces Broadmarsh - probably allowing for direct access without needing stairs/steps/ramp.

Sounds reasonable, but for a council as cash strapped  as Nottingham, I dare say it's a project well down the list of things to do. With their seemingly unerring ability to generate losses no doubt the scheme would  run over budget by a few million, take twice as long to construct and never make a return on investment.

In the ((very) long) time it would take to get the Electric Tram route(s) finalised, finance sorted  and Legislation for it through Parliament, the City council would have plenty of time to open up the Thurland St tunnel for visitors /tours and recoupe the costs.

Is it actually a City Council proposal or just the thetram unofficial group, who's thoughts on how fast the new network should be completed border somewhere between totally unrealistic and fantasy.

I'd never heard of them before, but reading their website they seem to be living in extreme cuckoo land. Their naivety is alarming.

I'd not heard of them either CLIFF TON till I googled electric trams Nottingham.

I found them wanting the track sections on the road to be finished in weeks not years like in Beeston laughable.

Do they not realise all utilities have to be removed from under the track route, where they follow the route and those across the route relaid in ducting as they won't be accessible in the future and that has to be done one utility at a time.

Just a list of the obvious ones, Gas, Water, Telephone both local and National Trunk network cables and others that can't be mentioned, Cable T.V, Electric (both local distribution and H.V distribution), Foul Sewers, Surface water drains.

'Thetram' is quite possibly a one-man-band called Greg Dawson, an IT specialist who runs Net-workedcouk Ltd and CountyIT.co.uk

How? I think it pie in the sky to even suggest it. The indoor market, with all its facilities and convenience, is struggling and quite why people will pay to walk down a tunnel  to a market or simply to wander about is beyond me. It will cost millions to complete, recoup cost? not a chance
