Hi Stavertongirl  thanks for telling me about the cakewalk being at Goose Fair,  just a quick story Friday night 8th Oct 1965 the following day was my wedding day, any way all the ladies had just had

When I was about 15 my two friends and I decided we wanted to be at Goose Fair when it ended at midnight (?) on the Saturday.  Another friend (Deirdre) and her brother lived up Sherwood Rise and invit

GOSH!!!!  Goose Fair what memories? age 13/15   used to walk down to the Forest from Robin Hood Chase with my  best friend Wendy Husband . each night Monday till Wednesday, What I here you l

And the Rota, if you had long hair it would drag your head back, the clever ones used to crawl round the walls and then the end bit were you had to get to the middle. It was a bit uncool if you fell on the floor and got rolled over.

I remember going on those swinging basket/swing things! They still have them, you still don't have any straps... Last time I went, we went on most of the big rides, although I hate fair ground rides, makes me very uneasy at the thought of them being taken down and rebuilt numerous times.

I'm just in it for the candy floss, doughbuts and ginger snaps.

Travelling fairs seem to have a better safety record than static ones. Now all the kids (even the grandkids) are old enough to go themselves, we don't bother with rides. It's not the ride that makes me dizzy, it's the price of going on them Like you, I like the smells and the food. One year I went round and took loads of photos. I might do it again with my digital.

Came across this, which, according to the date on it, my dad took at Goose Fair 1964. It's a completely random shot; all the people are strangers who just happened to be there at the time. There's a remote chance someone might recognise themselves from 49 years ago.

Another sign of getting old; Goose Fair in the past always seemed better than it is now.

Great foto from the 60's -- can I nick it for another site please with copyright acknowledgement

Anybody got any more from the same era ?

The big Swing Boats were nicknamed "Monty" and Winny" after Field Marshall Montgomery and Winston Churchill

I may actually be over for the fair this year, if it all falls into place I shall be going to Notts in the afternoon then take the kids to the fair on the Sunday.

Babs,

I remember the baskets and hanging on for dear life, i'm not surprised they aren't there anymore. We always went on them but i can't say it was a favorite of mine. I have been trying to remember which was my favorite one and i have decided i didn't like any of them. I am a mardy mardy mustard.

I see! For some reason I thought they were the swing seat things that go round in a circle up high. I hate the pirate ships! When I was younger my sister took me on and made me sit on the very last seat at the back. Traumatised I wah!!

I understand that someone is trying to get the big Goose to be paraded through the city on its way to its usual stand at the end of regory Boulevard. What does the gang know about this ?

It won't make any difference. People seem to like being ripped off in the name of tradition. As for pick pockets. Our city fathers like to think that they've cured crime in Nottingham. Just remember. In the Socialist Republic of Nottingham the real hardened criminals are people who drive or park in the wrong place, and all resources have to be directed towards teaching them a lesson.

On the contrary. From what I read the real hardened criminals are the pickpockets who live in the Council House !

Does the fair stand on a Sunday?
