Hello there - Hey Arnold

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

With the benefit of hindsight (wonderful thing!) posted a bit of a daft question about registering. If I'd have thought a bit more I'd have seen it was pretty obvious.

Anyway, been a follower of the site for quite a while which brings back some great memories. Originally from Arnold, 1962 to 84 and now retired in Derbyshire.

Looking forward to joining some conversations

Hi there Hey Arnold, Welcome to Nottstalgia.
I lived in Arnold from 1958 to 1975 (up the posh end smile2)

In a nutshell ……. Attended Kingswell Junior School and then Carlton Le Willows Grammar, worked for a few years in New Basford and left Nottingham in 1975.  Returned in 2004.

Hi Lizzie,

A little more about myself then....

Born in January 1962 in Highbury hospital then home to Ravenswood Road (Definitely not the posh end!)

Lived there, attending Hill Rise Infants, Kingswell Juniors then Redhill Comprehensive, leaving Arnold in '84 when we got married. Lived in Long Eaton for 2 years until we bought our first house on Cheltenham Street Old Basford.

We Lived there for 10 years then emigrated to Hatton Derbyshire in 1996 to be closer to work at the Toyota plant,  then moved back up the road a couple of miles to Hilton in '99 were we still are.

Retired at Christmas after 28 years and am now busier than ever!!

That's me in a nutshell, anything else just ask....

Do you remember Mrs. Pratt and Mr. Stirland at Kingswell?

Both my parents lived on Cheltenham St before marriage. Mam actually on the street, dad in Bell Terrace. The latter was demolished and Pear Tree Court built on there. They married in St Aidan's church.

I remember going to the wedding of two friends of my sister's at St Aidan's church in 1967.

They had a week's honeymoon in Rimini and then emigrated as ten pound poms to Australia.  I believe they still live somewhere around Melbourne.

St Aidan's was very high church, if I remember correctly. Lots of smells and bells. Saw the wedding photos only the other day when I was looking for something.

@Hey ArnoldI don’t have many memories of my time at Kingswell to be honest.  Either no teacher made a special impression on me or my memory is rubbish.  The staff I do remember are Mr Johnson (the headmaster), Mrs Allen (the School Secretary, who had long red painted fingernails and frightened the crap out of me), Pop Morley (who taught violin amongst other things, and looking back was possibly a bit of an unsuitable character to be working with young kids) and Mrs Wardell (Wardle?)

The two you mention don’t ring any bells but you’re quite a few years younger than me, I’d left Kingswell before you were even born!

LizzieM you're right about Pop Morley! He was 'had up' for interfering with a girl whilst giving her private violin lessons.

I can remember Mr. Johnson teaching us woodwork, of course we all wanted to use the biggest saw to cut the smallest piece of wood which didn't impress him at all :(

We were also married in St Aidans Church and had our reception at the Royal Hunt in Top Valley

Hey Arnold

Pop Morley used to come to our house to give my younger brother violin lessons and he (brother) used to complain whenever he was due, saying he didn’t like him.  I thought he was ‘creepy’.

Regarding the staff at Kingswell, this morning I’ve been in touch with a few friends from those days and they’ve come up with the following:-

Mrs Pettit

Miss Costain, who I now remember being my Form teacher

Mrs Thompson

Miss Wardell, another of my Form teachers

Mr Morris

There were 2 Mr Johnsons, a teacher and the Head

Mrs Ryan who ran the Tuck Shop

Miss Padden, a ‘Speech teacher’ I’ve been told.  I think all schools should have one of those these days!

Miss Costain became Mrs. Pratt and she was my first class teacher. We used to sing/chant

Miss Costain went to Spain in a chocolate aeroplane

Bought a hat, threw it back

Now her name is Mrs. Pratt

Now you've said it I can remember the two Mr. Johnson. I can't recall ever having any interaction with the head, thankfully, but remember him as this tall imposing figure moving around school which I suppose he would have done to young kids. Did you have school houses in your time? I remember them as red, yellow, blue and green each named after a figure in British history. If I'm right they were Scott, Caxton, Baird and I think Chaucer.

When you say you lived in the posh end of Arnold where was that?

Joined yesterday and have had a bit of a conversation with LizzieM and Katyjay on message test forum. I know, entirely the wrong place but I'm just feeling my way and that's why I'm reintroducing myself here.

Born in Highbury hospital in January '62 then lived on Ravenswood Road Arnold until I married my wife RadFordee in May '84. We lived in Long Eaton for a couple of years until we bought our first house on Cheltenham Street Old Basford in June 1986.  We then emigrated to Hatton in Derbyshire, in September '96 moving back down the road a couple of miles to Hilton in September 1999 and have stayed there ever since. Retired at Christmas after 28 years working at Toyota UK and am now busier than ever!!

Looking forward to joining in a few conversations and hearing people's memories

When I get back home I will check the family history. I do believe from memory, grandparents lived at 3 different houses on Cheltenham St. Grandma must liked to 'flit'.

  • Cliff Ton changed the title to Hello there - Hey Arnold

Radfordee, a big welcome to NS. I remember Gamble Street from when I were a little urchin who lived off Denman Street, the other side of Alfreton Road. But that were way back afore you were  born. Look forward to swapping chatter from you and yours. If you need any info I'm sure someone will oblige. Regards.      B.

Been up and down Gamble Street on Streetview, but couldn't see any motor company. To my shame, I've not visited that area for about 40 years.

I used to drive through Hilton and Hatton on my way to Ellesmere port, to take 20 Ton of coal to Bowater paper Mills, but that was back in 1968.   B.

Look again Barrie. It’s clearly there. They specialise in the repair of Rolls and Bentleys, especially the older models. They used to be on Forest Rd. in the stone wall next to the High School.

@Hey Arnold

I lived on Winthorpe Road, we moved into the brand new house in March 1958.  The roads hadn’t been made, in fact Rolleston Drive didn’t even go as far as our road.  I remember clearly the removal van struggling to get up the hill in snow.  It wasn’t posh at all but a very big deal for my parents to have a 25 year mortgage around their necks, oh and an indoor toilet and bathroom.
The area soon filled up with young families, but mostly boys and I became a real tomboy, playing football and cricket, climbing scaffolding on the houses that were still being built around us and going off up towards the Plains exploring the fields with all the lads.  Those fields would eventually be built on by Wimpey and became an estate of roads named after England footballers.  Arnold High School was built soon after we moved up there too.
