Pubs closing or closed down

Re reusing ice, despite a couple on here doubting such I assure you it "did" happen, did as in the 1990's, maybe not at the all singing all dancing busy places with likes of a north sea trawler's ice making machine installed but at the quieter pubs when the old 12-2.30 6-11 hours were in force when part melted cubes in the on the bar ice buckets would be put in chiller etc to refreeze, was never in the pubs (working) at 11.30pm, but assure you I've seen it done more than once at 3pm,

If you stood there and paid that for four drinks then you and the landlord deserve each other...I'd have told them to sod off and walked out.

Errrrm lace market Skin (empty @ 10pm on a Saturday night ) & Bluu bar the only 2 bars now left open on the once buzzing Broadway.

I was in Bluu a week last Saturday night at the 'busiest' time, Red. It wasn't that busy at all relatively. Nor were the streets around the Lace Market generally. It seems to me like the area is on the wane in popularity with just a few isolated businesses that do well. Not that It'll worry me. :-) I have to say though that I do like Keanes Head and The Cock and Hoop. Both nice little pubs.

The Rose on St Peters street has been standing boarded up for maybe a year if not more, only been in twice and that was enough....

What's going to be next? the White Horse on Faraday road?

Did anybody here ever visit Kelly's Tavern (formerly know as The Swan and Salmon) In Newark before it's sad decline and eventual closing down? The last time I walked past it nearby the lock the empty building was beginning to look quite dilapidated and down-at-heel.

The pub used to stock Okells ales from Douglas, Isle of Man which was something of an acquired taste. I could never quite understand why the pub wasn't more successful with it's enviable situation by the River Trent. Quite convenient for a mini pub crawl up to The Barge floating pub just up the towpath too.

Went through Newark a couple of weeks back , and I was glad to see the Castle Barge was still up and running (I used to frequent that place cirrca 1982)

As for the Old Rose, I used to booze in there of a lunch time when I worked at the Raleigh, (I had my 18th in there, I'd only been going in a year and a half by then ................LOL)

As you say Stu the beer was an Acquired taste that fact alone may had something to do with it's demise..........just a thought.

Maybe so. A great shame though. It's sad to see the state the place is in now.

Really, and I only went by it today!

As for the Rose Grower, It looks like I was totally wrong about its future.

It looks like it is going to be a nursing home...............................

The Hall Park Tavern is now reduced to rubble....... progress eh??

It was my 'local' for over 14 years. Won all my dart and later on, pool trophy's there. Played as a partner to Tony Matthews RIP.

I'm a little miffed to learn that Old Speckled Hen (OSH) is a Greene King product! It isn't one of my favorites, but it is popular with the "MG" crowd. What is the world coming to?

Which reminds me - we are taking a trip out to the Michigan Brewing Company this weekend to fill up two 5-gallon kegs of their brews! Den would NOT be disappointed in their offerings!

Frank, did you know a Alan Birch who was a regular in the Hall Park Tavern? His daughter Sherrell worked behind the bar for a short time, a few years ago. It was Alan's local for years.

More than likely Katy, but the old grey matter isn't working at the mo.

I'll have a word with a mate of mine to see if he recognises the name.

I knew a couple of Alan's but the only Sherrell I recall was the landlord's (Arthur) daughter.
