I can see what you mean LL. The picture of the 'Linga Longa' looks quite up to date though. The caravan site we stay at, is either Walshes or the Royal Oak, which is where we are booked for this year again. They are on tuther side of the main road. Though the pub had been demolished last year when we went. We were told it was to be rebuilt?

I remember the chippie near the Ritz very well. For some reason once or more a week, a group of us would dash all the way down there from school and congregate outside the shop with our chips and peas. I think we had an hour and a half for lunch so we made it back on time. The layout is very similar as you say to the 'Linga Longa, you can imagine the Ritz just out of view on the right, and the GAYE cafe on the other side of the road. You can imagine the 'In for a Penny' or 'The Royal Oak' as it was in the olden days, in the distance. But afraid it's the one at Winthorpe Miduck.

As a special treat I went to the Burton Joyce chip shop yesterday. Two haddock and chips with mushy peas - all for £23.20!! The battered fish was indifferent, the chips (enough for 8 people!) were sog

On different topics I have noticed people rate Eptons in Skeg, I found this link on Facebooks Nottingham Way Back When site, of the area in the 1900s, I believe Eptons is in the area. I tried to copy the photo but my skills are not good enough. Hope this works.

Yes, Trogg.  The picture appeared 'as if by magic' as Mr Benn used to say (the children's programme, not the politician!).

Not a lot of Cod comes from British waters, the majority is from Icelandic and Norwegian water.

You beat me to it Brew.

For 12 years our weekly shop was done regularly in French supermarkets. Mainly Lidl, Carrafore, Super U and Casino. The extensive fish sections were quite different from ours, with species that are quite uncommon in UK shops but often caught in UK waters. Crabs and Lobsters are proudly presented as 'Cornish'. There was always a refrigerated fish lorry or two on the ferry from Plymouth. We need those exports for products that are not popular in Britain. If there is a 'fish war' with France then we stand to lose.

I've cooked a few crabs but not lobsters - maybe if they get cheaper?

When I was in the fishing port of Tarbert at the top of the Mull of Kintyre I was told by a fisherman that they shipped two large container loads of live shellfish in tanks to the Continent every week. It's a very long road trip from Tarbert to the Channel ports.

It's an eyeopener to go round French supermarkets and look at some of the disgusting things they eat!

@CompoJust been reading your old posts about Arnold. To me Hatter's was always the best chippy in Arnold and as a small kid I was always desperate to see over the high counter. I used to try to pull myself up enough to be able to get a good look but could never manage. I remember what an experience it was to sit upstairs, the dumb waiter that the plates of chips would come up on and how steep and noisy the stairs seemed. Can't remember the names of the owners but I recall he was always quite dapper and the lady always seemed quite glamorous to me!

Opposite The Greyhound pub, Nottingham Road (still there)

Opposite Wood Street on Front Street

We used to call the one opposite The Greyhound the greasy Greek's and if I remember correctly it was the first chippy in Arnold to serve saveloy

The one opposite Wood St. was Eat Out, it had a green sign with yellow writing and again if I remember correctly it was the first to serve in polystyrene trays. We always went to Hatter's and if we had pie and gravy we used to take a bowl and they'd put paper over the top with an elastic band round it

I only remember the shop opposite the Greyhound as a shoe shop in the late 50's on, untill it was converted back to a chip shop maybe in the late 70's, by a Greek (maybe Cypriot) couple, the wife worked with my Mother and the husband Chris worked in the very popular chip shop on Mansfield Road opposite York house. (name escapes me)

Not many people new it had previously been a chippy.

I could be wrong (usually am) but i think there may have been a chippy called queen's fish bar down that end of mansfield rd in the 70's. There was also another chip shop a bit further up on the same side called las palmas, it was just before the mayfair chinese restaurant. These & the noor jahan were mine & hey arnolds eateries after a saturday night pub crawl in town or in the old grey nags head further up mansfield road.

Back to Linger-Longer

Each weekend a friend of our's would go to the East  Coast,    He had a caravan on Stow's Manor Farm. Each night after going tp the pub. He would call at the Linger/ longer then one night he said I allways know when they give me less chips   ." why we ask"

Well if i get  a full bag  of chips I make it back to the Van to put the rubbish in the bin, but some times I will only get to the bus stop then I have to look around for a waste bin.

Only once ever shopped in the Linga Longa chippie, when we were staying at Chapel St.Leonards. Called in on our way back from a visit to Skegness, (on recommendation of a friend). They were the worst chips I have ever tasted. It was like they had been cooked in washing up liquid. We tried two chips each and chucked the rest in the bin. Absolutely diabolical.
