philmayfield 6,089
Our local farm shop at Gonalston near Lowdham has burnt down!
Oztalgian 3,218
Is that Budgens on Southwell Rd? I think we had a snack there the last time we were in the UK. Quite OK it was too. As a kid I used to ride my bike from Epperstone down Gonalston Lane between the gravel pits to get to the Trent at Hoveringham to go fishing.
philmayfield 6,089
That's the one. The walls are still standing but the asbestos roof has collapsed. That's going to be a 'clear up' problem. They were getting expensive so now we've got to shop elsewhere!
Rob.L 1,084
I wonder if it was arson or accidental. I remember going there and they had one of those Kamado BBQs outside for display. They retailed at about £750! Next thing, I read that it had disappeared overnight.
philmayfield 6,089
I agree. Their 'Egg Shaped' barbecues were very expensive. There was a lot of wood in the structure as it used to be a barn. Funnily enough I was chatting to one of the owners, Ross Mason, on Friday. They had previously complained about the asbestos roof so that will now be sorted in the rebuild. I feel sorry for the staff, some of whom have been there for years. RadFordee 67
It got a mention on the BBC east midlands news at lunchtime, looked a real mess.
philmayfield 6,089
We've just been to the alternative Hockerton Farm Shop. It would have been better if that had burnt down! What a poor selection.
Rob.L 1,084
Bit of a trek for you, but Spring Lane Farm Shop’s meat and bakery isn’t half bad.
philmayfield 6,089
We go by there regularly but have only been in once. I'll be passing tomorrow lunchtime so I'll drop in. I fancy a steak and kidney pie for dinner.
trophydave 12
I used to live just up the road although I cant remember there being anything there, not even a barn, perhaps that came after I moved.
philmayfield 6,089
I’ve been driving past it for 60 years. As a barn and not a shop it would have been less conspicuous. It belongs to Masons the butchers family. They used to have a shop at the top of Derby Rd. near to Canning Circus - Bill Mason back in the 60’s.
trophydave 12
It must be my memory playing up.I do remember the house on the corner as you turn off the main road into Gonalston and also the mill being an empty shell probably late 70s.
philmayfield 6,089
There is a house on the corner on the Gonalston turnoff which is now a b&b. The mill, which has been rebuilt into a residence, is the next house along the back lane on the right. Mason’s farm house is on the main road just before the damaged farm shop, previously a barn prior to 2003.
Rob.L 1,084
The short strip of the old road outside the farm shop was used for parking when I was bike racing in the 60s/70s as it was where the start/finish lines were for 10-mile time trial events (it’s exactly five miles from there to Oxton Island).
