Rob.L 1,088
...in 1902. And I bet they complained about it then, as well. Interesting to see how much (and how little) has changed in over 100 years. https://player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/watch-tram-rides-through-nottingham-1902-1902-online

Cliff Ton 10,464
Nice one. Despite what you read here sometimes, it's surprising to see how many things haven't changed. And back then, was there any man who didn't wear a hat?
denshaw 2,871
Surprised how busy it was.

catfan 14,793
Some things never change. Notice how pedestrians walk in front of the tram ! Also the bloke sweeping the hoss shit up !
Cliff Ton 10,464
At the point on the film where they cross the junction of Carrington Street/Canal Street........ ...I wonder if it was the same copper in the middle of the road as on Picture the Past's photo at that same location
TGC 216
Fantastic clip Sir. The first one showed the British Rail offices, with the parcel receiving shed siding in the background. Dad had to go into those offices to collect his wage packet. Thanks.
Rob.L 1,088
Commo, The link popped-up on the Nottingham Facebook page. They have lots of good stuff now and again. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Nottingham/372586256090980?ref=stream
DAVIDW 1,683
Parts of that tramcar film from the BFI , were first shown on TV a year or so ago in a programme called The Lost World Of Mitchell and Kenyon . You can see the programme on youtube that features workers in mainly Northern towns http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJJEqfMfqpw Other parts of the series can be found in the right hand menu of the video . A couple more from the ,BFI site with Nottingham content same era , though not as good as the tram ride . Workers leaving Stoney Street at lunchtime . If you want to get ahead .....get a straw boater ! Funny to think ,some of these could be your relatives ! http://player.bfi.org.uk/player/kxbDA2ZTo5IbuwhWzS6SfnQIdwVSa_MX/default/search Similar scene , workers leaving Thos.Adams lace factory . http://player.bfi.org.uk/player/82ZTA2ZTo1kxORS4zt7nThnqisvDcS7m/default/search Scene at Trent Bridge http://player.bfi.org.uk/player/9zZ2Y1ZTp44CfV2SURaBJfR8yUKYkoTL
Bilbraborn 1,594
It seems that cyclists were idiots then (as now) even though it seemed to be quicker by bike. Was there any traffic discipline in those days? Loved it.
DAVIDW 1,683
Oh dear . This is the third episode of Lost World Of Mitchell and Kenyon that shows parts of that 1902 tram ride in Nott'm mixed in with the presenter riding on a new one . Is this viewable overseas ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNVthr44XqU
Mess 617
Thanks for posting this clip. It's one of the most amazing films of old Nottingham I've ever seen. My maternal grandfather was a conductor on the trams but he was only 7 in 1902
benjamin1945 16,158
Great stuff catfan,...........Nottingham so recognisable all those years ago............i remember the Tram lines still being there in the 50s in Basford, and i'm sure on Piccadilly going into Bulwell depot....?
Cliff Ton 10,464
And a variation on the theme from this earlier thread. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=13334
Cliff Ton 10,464
I've merged catfan's later post with the earlier one by Rob. L. It's the same material and it's useful to bring it back to people's attention, but the first version is a much better hi-res picture.

The Pianoman 1,532
Most will have seen this before but someone has very kindly colourised it and added sound. makes interesting viewing:-
DAVIDW 1,683
The same chap has also posted the same coloured 1902 journey alongside a comparable modern day journey. Looks like that's filmed whilst on an electric scooter. Because of the Broadmarsh demolition the route goes a bit askew through the new corridor but some old buildings can still be seen.
