Odd name for a pub, was it named after someone or is it a corruption of Plumtree? I've never been in it. Trumans Brewery originally from London at one time the largest brewery in the world. Can anyone remember any other Truman houses in the city or Nottinghamshire? I can only remember the Trent Navigation being a Trumans Burton pub but not any others. Dark Angel 138
@Oztalgian likely to have been named after the Plumtre family who owned a large house on Stoney Street. (John )Plumtre had been an M.P. for Nottingham.

Willow wilson 894
In the Lace Market there is a Plumptre Street, Plumptre Square and a Plumptre Place. There are some similar places elsewhere in the county. All spelled with 2 'P's and 1'e'. Interesting factoid; Town Arms pub was in Plumptre Square between Pemberton st and Short stairs. I believe the milkman daily delivered there many years ago.
Cliff Ton 10,457
Also in the Plumptre Square area is/was the Plumptre Hospital - and the building is still there. http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/articles/sneinton/sm65_21-28.htm
notty ash 370
According to Wikepidia John de Plumptre, Mayor of Nottingham, founded Plumptre Hospital in 1392. It was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and supported two priests and "thirteen poor women broken down of age and depressed of poverty". It was endowed with 13 properties around the town.
Dark Angel 138
@Willow wilson: I had spelt the word correctly, however, my I pad had other ideas: insisting on ‘plum tree’. After faffing about & being in a hurry, I hadn’t spotted the middle ‘p’ was missing. Apologies for my ineptitude. Aide memoir to self, I must control my I pad!
The Pianoman 1,532
Well that's made me look at my own post. Its Plumptre Way Eastwood - not Plumtre. I had never noticed the p in the middle.
Cliff Ton 10,457
The village off the A606, near Keyworth, has the simple basic spelling. https://goo.gl/maps/tXkdhTjhtsF9i7YUA
notty ash 370
If you think in terms of older English vs modern pronunciation pronunciation, then old Plumptre and the modern Plumtree are possibly not all that different.
Dark Angel 138
I don’t think there is any correlation between the Plumptre family and the Plumtree village. Am sure the village predates the families arrival in Nottingham by a few centuries. The Pumptre family made there fortune as wool merchants, whilst owning tracts of land and buildings in Nottingham, am unaware of them owning swathes of land containing villages. They also owned property in Calais. The village would have been owned by some Lord. His name eludes my memory. I wonder if the Plumptre Square hospital founded by John de Plumptre in 1392 was formerly the leper hospital, or was that elsewhere? Another piece of rubbish stored in my archive is the H in Nottingham is silent, with the word being pronounced as Nottingam. This I pad does not like the word ‘Plumptre’.
